Superbrain Vs Procrastination - 4 Ways To Smash Procrastination

in #hacks6 years ago

We all desire freedom to choose what we want to do and when we want to do it, and flexibility in our time and priorities is very important to us. We are taught to resist discipline and we hold doing our hearts desire sacred.
A lot of times we postpone things we need to, sometimes it is because we have more important things to do, sometimes it is because we are tired and sometimes we simply procrastinate.

Procrastination is postponing something that has to be done for no good reason. There are times in which a little procrastination can be harmless but, sadly, chronic procrastination is a serious problem that leads to dire consequences both material and physical.
I remember times in which I procrastinated, and didn't pay a parking ticket just to get a 5 times bigger fine six months later, but that is far from being the worst possible scenario. I can't even begin to imagine how many people procrastinated and didn't do the medical examination early to then later discover a dire situation that cannot be reversed easily.
Most often we procrastinate on our goals, postponing taking care of our bodies, financial situations, family issues up to the point in which we don't have a choice anymore or it is already to late.

To create the extraordinary life we all desire and fill it with meaning we have to learn how to crush procrastination.

I recently did a Mindvally quest called Superbrain. In this 30 day program, created by world famous memory and brain power expert named Jim Kwik, I learned many interesting techniques and methods to increase my brain power.
In one of the bonus videos in the program Jim gave 4 incredible ways to smash procrastination that I want to share with you.

4 Ways To Smash Procrastination

  1. Understand your reasons - We have to figure out the reason we procrastinate, and the most common reason is because we don't set goals to ourselves and when we do the goals that we set are based on the widely spread SMART method :
SMART is a acronym for Specific,Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound. This method of goal creation was used for many years as the best way to create effective goals. Nowadays, the SMART method does not deal with your inner motivation and the reason you pursue the goal to begin with. That is why another much more effective and whole method is here to replace the SMART method, The HEART method.
The HEART method is another acronym by which we need to build our goals:

H - Healthy, when building the goals we need to make sure that the goals are healthy, ecological and fit our inner moral compass.
E - Enduring, the goals we build need to be long lasting and sustainable over time, just think about a big project and the many challenges you need to face along the way.
A - Alluring, the goals we pursue need to be attractive and inspiring, they need to ignite a passion inside.
R - Relevant, the goals we are setting must be our goal, goal that are relevant to the person we are and are a reflection of our values.
T - Truth, we need to set goal that are true to us. Don't set a goal because someone else is doing it, set only those goals you really want to pursue.

Armed with The HEART method it is much easier to set goals we will actually follow through on and won't procrastinate.

  1. Create bite size tasks - If a project or a task looks to big and monumental for us to accomplish, there is a good chance we will start procrastinating and putting off the project. To avoid that we need to break down the project to small pieces so small that they are extremely easy to accomplish. A famous dentist once said that to improve the flossing of his patients he asked the to floss just one tooth every time.

  2. Use The Zeigarnik Effect - The Zeigarnik effect describes a situation in which it is easier to remember and complete unfinished tasks. It was discovered while observing waiters that remembered all the customers orders up to th serving process.
To use the Zeigarnik effect to deal with procrastination is to simply start, once you start a task you will be more likely to complete it.

  3. Be kind to yourself - Very often, when we procrastinate and don't do something we know we need to do, like going to the gym, we come down on ourselves with harsh words and self inflicted suffering.
If we didn't do something we need to be kind to ourselves and say Okay,I didn't do it today, I'm only human, Tomorrow I will do better. This method has been scientifically proven to be more effective than being hard on yourself.

These 4 tips are sure to help you to smash procrastination and make yourself into a more productive and happy person.
I know that is what they did for me.
