TODAY IS NATIONAL BOOK LOVERS DAY!

Every day is an opportunity to celebrate! Today is National Book Lovers Day, one of my favorite days of the year. I’ve been an avid reader since I was a young child. Books opened a whole new world for me. Books allowed me to believe anything was possible. I loved reading a good story and learning (and still do!)

I loved going to the library and spending hours there selecting my books for the week. I would select biographies, mysteries, thrillers, and detective novels, just to name a few genres. As I read, the characters and places came to life in my mind. I loved spending time just sitting with my grandmother and reading together over a cup of tea. Even today as I read I think of my grandmother and must have a cup of tea.

My reading drove my mother crazy when I was younger. She would always remind me that you don’t read at the table, because sitting at the kitchen table with was a time to be social. Eventually I learned to balance my reading and social interaction. Finding that balance led to a lot of night reading hidden under the covers with a flashlight is a kid.

My husband and I passed on our love of reading to our son, DJ. It is becoming a parent that allowed me to understand my mother’s point of view about reading. The hardest thing I ever had to say to my son was put down the book and get some sleep. My husband and I would also have to check to see that he was not reading under the covers with a flashlight. My son is still an avid reader. His favorite books are the Warhammer series, Tom Clancy novels, and engineering textbooks.

I have always been a book lover. Just thinking about books brings back fond memories. I prefer the feel of an actual book in my hands when I read instead of reading off the computer. There is something about the pleasure of holding the book and turning the pages that e-books just don’t provide.

Thank you, Nana, for sharing your love of books with me.

I could go on and on about my love for books, but I must read my case files for my debate class. Tomorrow morning, my reading will pay off as I crush by opponents in the debates.

The Doors Sing "Reading Rainbow" Theme (Late Night with Jimmy Fallon)

I watched Reading Rainbow with my son when he was younger. Reading Rainbow was on from 1983 to 2006, from 2006 to 2009, all the shows were reruns. The show encouraged kids to read. This is a fun video with Jimmy Fallon, as Jim Morrison of The Doors, singing the Reading Rainbow theme song.

I am re-reading one of my favorite books: The Count of Monte Cristo! I'm only about 1/3 of the way through, but I'm enjoying the familiar old story. Book Day!!!

That is a great book! I should create a list of books to reread, The Count of Monte Cristo, would definitely make the cut.

I used to call in sick just so I can finish the book I was reading. I didn't let work stop me from a good book. I haven't read an e-book in my life and I don't plan to. Just like you, I prefer the one where I can dog-ear a page or something I can turn every page physically as that's part of what reading a good book is. Old fashioned? I guess I am.

Great post! Thanks for sharing.

I don't think I ever called in sick to finish a book, however, I may have called in sick because I was up all night reading.

I'm not a fast reader so normally even if I stay up the whole night reading a book I don't get to finish it. So I call in sick so I can finish it : )

Reading speed isn't important as long as you enjoy what you read. I took a speed reading class in college, to prepare for the amount of reading required in law school.

Reading slow doesn't bother me. In fact it reminds me of eating, you know. When you read slow, it's like eating slowly, taking the time to savor each little flavor or spice in the food and enjoy how they mesh together to make the dish. Also like chewing your food slowly too.

That's why for a really good book like Tom Clancy's Hunt for Red October or Robert Ludlum's Bourne Identity, it takes me two days and two nights almost non-stop to read but I enjoy every minute of it.

What's NOT to love about cuddling up with a good book? Love the photo of the stack or books and china teacup!
