The State Department of Health of Hawaii just issued a warning about high bacteria (enterococci) levels at some popular beaches on the island of Hawaii.

Pokaʻī Bay Beach Park (659 per mL)
Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve (137 per mL)
Ko’olina Lagoon (178 per mL)
Ala Moana Regional Park (659 per mL)
Two sites at Queen’s Beach in Waikīkī (1,298 per mL and 1,445 per mL)

These high levels could make the person swimming in the water sick. If you are a local you will notice that these beaches are heavily trafficed by locals and tourists. This is a firm example of how the effects of the increased level of human activity is impacting the environment. The problem is not only the amount of human traffic, but also the amount of run off from the land. Each of these beaches is close to a stream, or inlet, where water runs off from the land.
