Why does urine infection more common in women?

Urine infection, medically known as UTI (urinary tract infection) is a quite common health problem for which patients visit a doctor. Statistically, and from personal experience, ladies suffer from UTI more than the gents. Why is this difference?

Why does UTI more common in female?

  • Close proximity of uretha to the anus. So that bacteria can get easy access to the urinary tract
  • Short length of the uretha than male which is one of the major causes of increased frequency of UTI in female
  • Minor trauma to the uretha during sexual intercourse has contribution to this increased prevalence of urinary infection in women
  • Males have a distinctive advantage for having prostatic fluid which has antibacterial properties. Females don't have similar thing

In this regards, here is a few "easy to follow advice" for ladies. By implementing this in daily life, a lady can reduce the risk of frequent urinary infection.

  • Drink at least 2L of fluid daily
  • Maintain a good personal hygiene and keep the perineum clean specifically after passing stool
  • Do not hold urine for long time. Regular complete emptying of bladder is important
  • Make a habit of emptying bladder before and after the sexual intercourse
  • Regular intake of cranberry juice or tablet maybe effective

Hello @hafiz34 just out of interest, do you know if the washing liquid ph has any effect on how often people can get urinary infections? I've heard it has an affect on yeast infections and mildly acidic washing liquid is recommended, around ph of 3.5 - 4.5.

Not sure if it would help in urinary infections though.

There is one risk factor for developing UTI and it is called loss of host defence When pH of the vagina is elevated from acidic(normal) to alkaline status, the good bacteria called lactobacili can't grow resulting in colonisation of bad bacteria and yeast.
One thing we should keep in mind that UTI and vaginal infections are kinda different entity. Vaginal infection can be turned into urinary infection but the most common bacteria causing UTI is known as E. Coli which comes from gastrointestinal tract i.e. from anus to uretha.
