Do you struggle with dry, itchy skin? Have you noticed that recently it seems to be getting worse? You’re not the only one.

Dry skin in winter is one of the most popular (or unpopular!) skin issues people deal with. The low temperature makes the humidity in the air fall, which means there is less moisture for your skin to absorb. Then, what little you have left is blown away from the harsh winter winds. What you’re left with is a dry, itchy, cracked desert where you once had soft, smooth skin.

But don’t worry. Here are some steps you can take to help keep your skin feeling its best, even in the face of the coldest temperature or the wickedest wind.

TAKE LUKEWARM (OR COLD) SHOWERS

Hot water causes dry skin, so it’s best to take lukewarm showers. In fact, there’s research to show that taking cold showers is actually ideal for your health, but if you just can’t handle that (I can’t!), try a lukewarm shower.

And if you’re using soap that dries out your skin, it will be even worse. Try an organic moisturizing soap.

MOISTURIZE AFTER YOU SHOWER OR AFTER YOU WASH YOUR HANDS.

If your skin feels tight, it’s probably because you need to moisturize. When you wash your hands or shower, it often robs you of your body’s natural moisture, but moisturizing after each shower or hand wash can relieve this irritation.

GET YOURSELF A HUMIDIFIER

Moisture in the air is good for your skin, and it’s the fact that the air is so low in humidity during winter that causes skin problems. And when your heat is running, that can make the air even drier. It doesn’t matter if you’re using oil, electricity, natural gas, or even a fireplace.

Having a humidifier running can do wonders for your skin. Even a small humidifier running in your bedroom during the evening will leave your skin feeling fresh and rejuvenated in the morning.

You might also try putting a bowl of water near your source of heat. It won’t go as far as a humidifier, but for the budget conscious it can make a difference.

COME IN FOR A TREATMENT

Here at Jiva Spa Toronto we have several treatments for dry skin.

The deep hydrating facial treatment is a specialized facial, designed with those who suffer from dry skin in mind. It’s designed to replenish the moisture reserves within your skin, leaving you with a healthier, happier face.

A hot oil scalp massage can make a big difference if you experience a dry scalp as well. Using a combination of sesame oil, avocado oil, and other essential oils, we use an Indian massage technique to work the oil into your scalp. This can relax your muscles and relieve tension, and it also helps to lock moisture into the scalp.

And an exfoliating treatment can get rid of the dry, dead, flaky skin cells left over on your body. A body scrub, a microdermabrasion, or a Jiva signature facial will do that nicely.

Protect your skin this winter. Just because it’s getting colder out doesn’t mean you have to have itchy, irritated skin. Follow the above steps, and your skin can look and feel as healthy in January as it does in July.
