BENEFITS OF GARGLING WITH SALT( AN ANTIBACTERIAL AGENT)

in #health6 years ago (edited)

The topic of today concerns us all because it concerns the hygiene of our oral cavity especially when it comes to sore throat (pharyngitis)

Salt which is also known as common salt or table salt is a crystalline mineral that has a number of great benefits to human.

The first essential use it serves is it's use as a food seasoning because it adds taste to our meals and is likewise use to preserve our food.

This same mineral (salt) is used in the production of certain plastics and product's, it is used in deicing highways and helps in conditions like hypothyroidism where one suffers from iodine deficiency.

Whatever has so much advantages is likely to have a disadvantage and that is where hypertension comes on board, where the excessive intake or consumption of common salt makes one at risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease.

But this isn't where I want to throw much emphasis on.

This crystalline mineral is one ingredient that has some characteristic's or properties of an antibacterial agent because of its capacity to inhibit the growth of microorganisms especially bacterias.

This property was not deciphered years ago but lucky enough the Father Of Modern Medicine in person of Hippocrates brought light to the antibacterial activity of salt.

It is in the nature of microorganisms to be ubiquitous meaning that you can find organisms everywhere and certain parts of our bodies have this organisms as a dwelling place though the serve as normal floras and won't cause harm to us (commensal organisms).

This post would add to our knowledge on the benefits of gargling with warm salt water and not limiting the use of this agent to just food seasoning and underutilising it to our detriment.

The first point we need to grab is that salt soothes most oral health problems maximally, oral health problems such as

  1. Sore throat ( pharyngitis)
  2. Laryngitis
  3. Tonsillitis
  4. Accumulated mucus
  5. Oral thrush
  6. Infected oral cavity
  7. Mouth odor
  8. Mouth/tooth decay
  9. Canker sores etc.

Gargling with warm salt water even helps maintain the natural pH level of the oral cavity.
There is confidence you've when you know your mouth ain't emitting a foul smell and it's worse when you're suffering from either of the above listed oral health problems.

It is very much easy getting a common cold and infection from mere kissing the lips of a partner with an infected tonsils or even giving a head to a guy having an STD (chlamydia or gonorrhea) you may end up having your throat infected.

It is ideal to be mindful of how clean whatever your putting in your mouth is because when your throat gets inflamed and infected it may become another sorry and uncomfortable case.

Natural agents like salt and water when gargled can help handle a sore throat through the antibacterial activity salt possesses.
Have it in mind that salt and water is a mouthwash on its own which serves as a microbial inhibitor.

Brushing your teeth with a paste is good but taking a further step to gargle a mixture of warm containing salt can help you maintain a good oral hygiene.

In summary

When you suffer from an oral health problem such as sore throat, gargling with warm salt water down your throat without swallowing the salt water would relief an inflammed throat and reduce the pain and other symptoms accompanied with a sore throat drastically.
This process can be repeated two- four times daily for a certain number of days but personally I try to gargle every morning and evening.
I can count on salt water mouthwashes to handle oral health problems such as a sore throat without getting an antibiotic, lozenge,NSAIDS from a Pharmacy store or going for a throat swab in a laboratory...

See you around buddy

You have a minor grammatical mistake in the following sentence:

Have it in mind that salt and water is a mouthwash on it's own which serves as a microbial inhibitor.
It should be its own instead of it's own.

Yeah Yeah. Salt is very useful in many ways. Nice sharing one of the useful ways with us.😎😎🤗🤗

Thanks for appreciating my post big sis

One of those old school natural treatments that actually works, and mixing the salt water with lemon or honey can help even more with a sore throat!

It is much better if you squeeze the juice of the lemon fruit into a little content of warm water and add some honey to it, it does the magic💯

Congrats @Eunireal1
