Aquaphobia is the persistent and unwarranted fear of water and drowning. And though many people have a certain level of fear of water and drowning, the people with Aquaphobia have this constant fear to the level it affects their day-to-day life. As irrational as it might seem, it causes anxiety and untold stress for the sufferer because people who have this fear believe that water represents danger and so they act accordingly. Aquaphobia includes the fear of travelling on water, swimming, and in most extreme cases, even being splashed with water. And because they are unable to control their fear, they do everything possible to avoid contacts with any body of water. Some cannot even look at the picture of an Ocean without experiencing chills while some cannot enter the washroom without being scared.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF AQUAPHOBIA?

Humans are not born with fears. Fears are developed when someone experiences danger or witnesses another who does.

  • The roots of aquaphobia can be as a result of traumatic incidents with water. It could be a case of having almost drowned, or being pushed into a body of water as a prank. Witnessing a traumatic event such as the drowning or death of a loved one in water can be a trigger.

  • The fear of water can sometimes be learned from caregivers or parents: these adults might have given too many cautionary warnings to the child about going into or near the water. A parent who is afraid of water is likely to pass on the fear to the children. The stories, movies, incidents or news reports about drowning can also trigger off a deep sense of fear of water.

  • People who are unable to swim and as such not used to water, like those who have grown up in sandy desert areas are more likely to develop Aquaphobia.

SYMPTOMS OF AQUAPHOBIA :

Physical and physiological symptoms of aquaphobia include;

  • Deep fright and avoiding water by all means.

  • Anxiety or panic attacks at the thought of facing water or coming in contact with it.

  • Victims of Aquaphobia often have poor physical hygiene because they avoid taking their baths most times .

  • At the sight of water, they begin to hyperventilate; they experience increased blood pressure and increased heart rate or shallow breathing.

  • They might pass out or faint at any sight of water

  • They exhibit shaking, Sweating, trembling, crying and other signs of loss of control.

  • Nausea.

TREATMENT :

  • The preferred treatment method is the exposure therapy where one is consistently and repeatedly exposed to the source of the phobia — in this case, water. As the patient is being exposed to water, the therapist will keep track of your reactions, thoughts, feelings, and sensations in order to help manage anxiety.

  • In cognitive behavioral therapy, the patient is taught to challenge their thoughts and beliefs about his fear of water and strategies to cope with those thought patterns and beliefs.

  • Also, several self-care techniques can be practice at home.

  • Daily physical activity, yoga, and deep breathing are all helpful strategies.

  • The patient can also work with a specially trained swim instructor who can help learn to feel comfortable swimming.

  • A doctor can prescribe medications to treat some symptoms.

Resteem issa goal for me
I must not be the only one to know the treatment of Aquaphobia.
Blessings.

This information is helpful for me

Insightful

I do not know how to swim but its clear that i'm not aquaphobic. SIN2 will be a success, of that i'm sure.

I'm @timmyeu of @euronation

I love this...it reminded me of when I almost drowned the first time I saw a pool of water; I outrightly dived in and like a fish, I drank a lot. Tho I'm not aquaphobic, I still remember everytime I see a pool.

QUICK QUESTION: Do aquaphobic folks ever bath?
