On the very low risk of dying from running a marathon

View this post on Hive: On the very low risk of dying from running a marathon

I've moved to Hive, along with most other people, following Justin Sun's takeover of Steem in the Spring of 2020. I believe hive is a lot more decentralised than Steem!

Sort:

I'm not really surprised that some people have heart attacks from half and full marathons. A lot of weekend warriors want to complete them and probably don't train as thoroughly as they should for such strenuous distances.

What surprised me was the relatively low risk overall.

I need to look more at what types are more likely to die. My working theory is actually the opposite - it's the experienced runner on for a pb ignoring the warning signs!

No surprise that men are twice as likley than women.

That actually makes sense too. I was thinking with the weekend warrior type that they would be more likely jar loose some artery plaque and cause a blockage. But yeah pushing through the "pain" could also be a issue. Like you mentioned in your article you experienced a weird feeling yourself while pushing it.

'Jar loose artery plaque'.... not sure if that's how fitness regimes work!

Interesting turn of phrase. Never heard that one before!

I'm not saying I know what I'm talking about, that is just what popped into my head. 🙄

I'm intending to jar some loose inna few hourz.

Its really sad when someone dies running, but it annoys me because I find parts of the media look for it as a way to discourage people for getting out and being active. Great post.
Regards @run.vince.run

It is a particularly news worthy even.

TBH I hadn't expected the risk to be so low!

Chances are all of those who died could have prevented it if they'd have just listened to the warning signs.... then again I guess the endorphins block those.

So sad to hear about their deaths. I understand how accomplishing running a marathon can feel but sometimes we need to take things in stride and truly test ourselves to see if our bodies are ready to be put under such strain espescially when targeting a PB.

Certainly no one will classify long distance running as dangerous as there is no sport without its own risks

I think they must feel the signs. Im gonna dig around for the cardiac arrest runnner survivors and see what they say on the matter.

The stats on base jumping are a lot worse. I think that's 1/60.

I am really sorry for these guys...

First of all, Any regular runner or athlete must pass a yearly cardiac check and complete analysis . No matter how hard/fast you will run. Sometimes a hidden anomaly in your heart or body can just appear while doing some efforts.
Prevention is the only weapon.

The problem as well is the lack of serious and consistent preparation of the runner...
People think are able to run a half Marathon without training 3 times a week and then the consequences of the over effort during the race can be really serious.

Whatever you do, running , cycling, walking, hiking... is better to be informed and take the correspondent precautions...

It does seem sensible to get yerself checked out.

The research I looked at didn't isolate for previous running history/ health.

Possibly the numbers overall are so low that you wouldn't get significant data by doing so.

Sensible advice none the less!

There was a statistic floating around (I won't go searching for the source) that in a year there are more deaths by thunder on Florida golf courses than deaths during all Ironman events throughout the world.

Of course you should always be prudent and watch your body.

I imagine there are a lot of golf courses in Florida.

Deaths by thunder? Does that scare people to death?

Eh, my mistake. By lightning, of course 😂

No need to be a masochist to run well... but a bit of pain could make you stronger. ;)
