Some studies show that people with gum disease are more likely have heart disease than those with healthy gums. So taking care of your teeth and gums may reduce your risk of heart problems. Brush after each meal and floss and rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash daily.

The best choice when you're thirsty? A glass of plain water. Soft drinks may have extra acids. Milk, cheese, and other dairy products help protect and strengthen enamel. If you don't eat dairy, look for foods with calcium added. You can wear down your enamel if you brush too fast and hard. Wait for up to an hour after eating sweets or citrus fruits before you brush your teeth. Acidic foods can soften enamel and may make it easier for you to damage it.

Saliva helps wash away food and bacteria that can lead to cavities. It also fights the effects of acidic foods. Drink water your mouth clean and moist. To keep your teeth strong, see your dentist every 6 months for a checkup and cleaning. Healthy gums should look pink and firm, not red and swollen.

So to keep gums healthy, practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss at least once a day, rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash once or twice a day,see your dentist regularly, and avoid smoking or chewing tobacco.
