HFMD's disease is an infectious disease that is contagious by direct contact from the case. It can infect all age groups but the majority are in children under 5 years of age. The incubation period of infection is between 3 and 5 days followed by major signs such as fever, sore throat, red rash with blisters on the palms, feet and mouth. Infected children may develop signs of vomiting, diarrhea and less appetite. Children who are infected with HFMD can be the cause of infection until the rash is dry.

Definitions and Causes

HMFD is an infection through a virus called enterovirus, or a virus commonly found in the gut. Examples of viruses that infect humans are poliovirus, Coxsackie virus A and B, echoviruses and enteroviruses 68-71.
HFMD can be caused by coxsackievirus A16, A5, A9, A10, B2, B5 and enterovirus 71. Coxsackievirus A16 (Cox A16) is the most common cause of HFMD but is least harmful.
HFMD caused by enterovirus 71 (EV71) is more dangerous and causes death. This is caused by cerebral infections (meningitis), brain infections (encephalitis), heart problems (myocarditis) and juicy lung infections.

How it spread?

HFMD is infectious. Infection can spread from human to human through contact with nasal and oral fluid, saliva, fluid from the blisters of the hands and feet, and the infected stools. One patient is most easily infected with another person within a week of infection.

Symptoms of Disease

HFMD comes with a blistering rash on the hands and palms (like a watery or red rash), a hand-stroke, foot and mouth area. Normally, almost all cases have a rash on hand, but only 90% of cases have rash in the mouth. Occasionally only rashes in the hands that arise if HFMD is infected with no rashes in other areas.
At the same time, patients can get fever, body aches, headaches, eye infections, abdominal pain and sometimes diarrhea.
Among the many viruses that cause HFMD, the virus caused by enterovirus 71 (EV71) is most dangerous. The fever is higher (39 degrees and above) and more than 3 days. EV71 was the cause of the death of 27 children in Sarawak from 34 deaths in 1997.
Things to keep in mind if your child has HFMD: -
• High fever.
• Fatigue and weak.
• Do not want to eat and urine.
• Fast breathing.
• Vomiting.
• Looks drowsy, dizzy and quick-tempered and crying.
• Epilepsy

HFMD treatment.

HFMDs are usually not harmful and lose their own. Most cases do not require hospitalization and should only be treated as outpatient.
Symptomatic treatment is required by most HFMD patients. This means lowering the fever, reducing pain such as headache and body aches, Increasing the patient's hydration and having enough rest. Nerve gels can be given to reduce oral ulcer pain.
ANTIBIOTICs should not be used in most cases.
Patients need to be separated from other children.
When should the patient be hospitalized?

• When a patient can not eat and drink and need to get water through the blood vessels
• Looks weak and bad, looks toxic
• If the fever is not reduced and high (38 and 39 degrees always) more than 4 days
• When doctors expect an infection to the brain area causing children to ruin, seizures, extreme tiredness, not sensitive to the environment.
• When there are heart problems such as heart sound disturbances, low blood pressure.
  There is NO vaccination for this disease at this time.

Avoid Infections!

It is important for you to wash your hands with soap every time you change the diaper of children exposed to HFMD.
You can also use water and soap (some suggest using Clorox) to clean the floor, toys, clothing and diapers that are affected by their stools or saliva.
Do not bring your child to the open space like a swimming pool or shopping complex. Schools and nurseries should also be avoided to prevent spreading infections.

Do not Panic

If you have an infection, do not panic. Most HFMDs are harmless and recover. What's more, if your children do not have fever, appetite is normal and looks cheerful even though there are rashes in the mouth and hands.
