This can be attributed to increased longevity and lower fertility rate in most other countries but with China, it is down to the strict family planning policy which was implemented in 1980.

With the policy in place, fertility rates have dropped dramatically in push to reduce uncontrollable population growth. This has the knock on effect of a declining percentage of the young population.

A key metric is the percentage of people over the age of 65. In developed countries this can range from 26% (US) to 34% (Denmark).
