katana, eski japonya'da savaşçıların fedoallere karşı hizmetleri neticesinde üretilmeye başlayan bir silahtır. tarihte, çeşitli şekillerde ve kalitelerde katanalar yapılmıştır. eskiden sadece aristokratlar tarafından seçilen "samuray" isimli savaşçılara verilmekteydi. katana son derece atiklik ve kıvraklık isteyen bir silahtır ve ayrıca kesin ölüm getirdiği bilinmektedir.
bu kılıç son derece dayanıklı ve bir o kadar da keskindir. bununla birlikte dünyanın en keskin kılıcı ünvanını elinde bulundurmaktadır. tabanca mermisini eşit iki parçaya bölecek kadar keskin, saç telini ortadan ikiye ayırabilecek kadar hassastır. bu silah japon halkında gururu, ruhani gücü ve itaatkarlığı temsil etmektedir. o kadar tehlikeli bir silahtır ki insan vücudunu tek hamle ile ikiye ayırabilir. neyse ki günümüzde sadece özel talepler üzerine üretilmektedir. geçmiş tarihte birçok kılıç türü ile rekabet içerisinde olmuş ve şüphesiz galip de gelmiştir, hatta kaynaklarda japonların düz uçlu kılıçları alay konusu ettikleri bile bahsedilmektedir.
