Veba, Yersinia Pestis adı verilen vebayı yayan bakteri tarafından oluşturulan enfeksiyon ve hastalıklar bütününe verilen addır. Veba bulaşıcı bir hastalık olup eskiden çok fazla insan ve hayvan bu nedenle hayatını kaybetmiştir. Kara ölüm adıyla da anılmaktadır. Hastalığın oluşmasındaki en büyük etken pis yerler diyebiliriz. Yeteri kadar temiz olmayan ve hiç güneş almayan bölgeler potansiyel hastalık kaynaklarıdır diyebiliriz. Bu tarz yerlerde yaşamak size vebaya neden olan bakterilerin bulaşmasına neden olacak ve kısa sürede hastalığı hissedeceksiniz.

Vebanın hep fareler tarafından bulaştırıldığı söylenir ama fareler hastalığın yayılmasında sadece bir aracıdır. Hastalığa neden olan bakterinin asıl kaynağı farelerin vücudunda parazit olarak yaşayan pirelerdir. Genel olarak fareler pirelerle birlikte yaşadıkları için insanlar arasında böyle bir kanı oluşmuştur. Ayrıca eskiden Avrupa'da yaşayan insanların yaklaşık olarak 3'te 1'i bu hastalıktan hayatlarını kaybetmişlerdir.
