Steem HF21 - How can I help Steem and then help myself?

in #hf215 years ago

The above Meme was produced using a photo owned by @lordnigel

In the end I'm a team player.  If the governance rules and Witnesses have come to a consensus and we are about to implement some stuff, then I want to know how to be a good Steem citizen and use this stuff!. I use the word stuff because truly as a general content creator and curator, I don't need to know the technical bits. I would just like some easy to understand guide on how to behave and how to preserve and grow my favorite blockchain STEEM.

Q1. STEEM PROPOSAL SYSTEM - Question for Witnesses/Steem Developers?

CAN I USE IT FOR MY IBT SURVIVAL ISLAND GAME SOME HOW?

  1. Practically how do I use this system when it comes live?
  2. How can I best position myself today, ready to use this in a way that benefits:
  • Firstly the Steem community and;
  • Secondarily myself.

My personal situation and example - what do I do?

I am working on a project to make a Educational computer game - How to survive in the Australian Bush. It's a fun to play open world game that runs on a PC (no its not yet connected to the internet or Steem blockchain, but it is starting to look like a fun game)

The above image is taken from the actual game under development. The game is called IBT Survival Island.

Instead of focusing on using the built-up platforms and front ends, websites or even the block chain technology itself I am just working in a small team to build a great game. A few key features

  • It's a PC game
  • It's an Educational Game (which is helpful for getting around some licensing issues)
  • It will teach people about native Australian Fauna and Flora
  • It could be used to promote and spread the word of STEEM??

Instead of building a game that is designed to get you to send me Steem, or use the Steem technologu resources as a selling point the game will stand on it's own feet. I want to use it to help Steem, but how can Steem help me to help Steem?

I am just building the game first, however I would like to then use the benefits of Steem to fortify the product. To do this I will read/write to the blockchain, tokenise etc. However this isn't key to the product. Where I think we have seen a few cases of people building things to suck the community in and profit during the process leaving a bad taste in Steemians mouths. I don't want to do this.

While I'm not trying to build a business out of the game, I would like somehow to see Steem benefit and if possible some form of assistance in covering the costs to complete the work - in particular the aspect that relates to linking it to Steem for the promotion of Steem.

To create the token I am gradually trying to save enough steem to pay the token creation price. You can see in my savings account I have saved 100 Steem. As things change so rapidly these days,  I have no idea when/if SMT's will come out and if they don't I'll need to pay the creation free on Steem-engine. I assume it's 200 Steem still?

I'm not looking to do an IPO or anything like this, I'm even happy enough to give away tokens where this helps the wider Steem community. Is there someone with some token economics who is willing to help me? Would such help come from SPS?

How can I use the SPS to help contribute to my expenses in building this product up in a way that delivers value to the Steem ecosystem?

Q.2 ECONOMIC IMPROVEMENT PROPOSAL

OK, so we are going to tweak the rewards etc in a way that encourages people to put Steem first and themselves 2nd. For instance instead of using automatic bid bots, people manually curate? is this the kind of things?? I wish I had more time to research. But this is a bit my point.

I really want some direction from the leaders here as to:

  1. What it is I should be doing to prepare?
  2. How can I help?
  3. When it's here how can I demonstrate it's use and lead by example?

OK, so I'll put myself forward again with another practical example.

I am a dolphin 5K plus in powered up Steem. Once HF21 is implemented, what is a good behavioral pattern for someone like me? I log on once a day and post comments, I upvote people and communities etc currently.

What should I be doing 'post HF21' to be a good Steem Citizen?

I would love to hear some different Steemains views. I don't expect to hear from a witness (most don't know I exist - is how it feels), but just anyone whom is across this stuff would be useful  - No expectations or judgements please with this post.

Cheers and Steemon!

It is a shame that you received no responses from any of the 100+ witnesses we have on Steem to answer your questions and concerns.

HF21 was the subject of a podcast yesterday in The Ramble Discord Server. A handful of witnesses attended and shared their thoughts on HF21. The following witnesses were in attendance during the podcast...

@arcange @enginewitty @followbtcnews @gtg @helpie and @jackmiller.

An excellent resource, should you not be familiar with it already, that is managed by @jackmiller (witness) is @witnesspage which tracks and steems posts by all the witnesses on the platform. I have not seen too many, or any for that matter, of posts regarding HF21. Maybe in the future. Who would know more about HF21 and the ramifications for Steem stakeholders/users than the witnesses?

Very good questions and I hope you find the answers you are looking for soon.

Thanks for your comment and directing others to this post :)

I will checkout the podcast - I'm still learning discord.

Cheers

You are very welcome.I am not sure if the podcast was recorded.

Looks neat! Kind of reminds me of RUST.

Is this game strictly a "stay alive" style game with no PVP or PVE..?

+1 for no IPO. I respect that!

I'm just a low ranked witness at the moment but I like your canter. (rank #78 currently)

As for STEEM integration I could certainly see some way of integrating upvotes from an account after completing missions or quests.. You could have folks delegate SP to your game account and have the game dish out upvotes as earned by players.

Currently it is really a solo "stay alive" PVE game in prototype; Multiplayer is on the far horizon (its just a heap more work, the concept is to start as a single player game build up your own island and then a bit later with updates through STEAM and DLC's etc people can visit each others islands).

Thanks that's food for thought re the STEEM integration idea. Curently thinking of making the base game free (So everyone can play for nothing); but if you want some special items/bonuses a small fee for DLC would be optionally available...I could link to this DLC download a Steem reward/upvote as well to entice people. I'm also happy to give away free liquid Steem from my delegation as in game prizes. I'll have to think on a just and fair way to reward players plus cover costs...bit later I can get into the coding to integrate better...hmmn lotsa work to go :)

By the way If I recall correctly I read one of your guides for building a witness server, it was the best although it was many moons ago - Others I read left out vital details.

You have my witness vote now as well.

Cheers

A very easy non-intrusive way to bring Steem subtly into it is two fold:

1- Soft consensus storage . Basically using the blockchain to store state data of user game progress, skills and inventory so if you or your server disappear then their progress is retrievable onchain, would be nice if the game mainly interacts via the steem api and record progress on chain every so often, maybe local store first and then every hour or so backup to chain. Could make mention of this technology in the game info pages about page etc and even a powered by Steem splash screen.

Secondly have a look at https://forum.drugwars.io and https://forum.splinterlands.io, both are Steem powered forums for games, the latter using both Steem and Steem-Engine SPT token distribution.

These forums can be created using https://tokenbb.io for the freemium forum and upgrade options available on https://shop.buildteam.io/product-category/tokenbb/ for things like open theme code , custom domain, custom beneficiary so you as the forum owner can earn from the activity of your users. Also can set it so topic creators earn a share of all rewards of the activity under their topic so incentivises them to keep conversation flowing.

We used forums for bug bounties and feature suggestions and we had enough Steem power to give comments like 50 cents to $1. If you don’t have enough SP can lease some on https://dlease.io

I’m a witness and CEO of buildteam.io the above are our products, if you ever want to talk business on Steem hit me up on Discord - thecryptodrive#8144 I can also introduce you to the Steem Business Alliance.

Cool - thanks for the detailed response.

As the game is intended to be downloaded from STEAM, the team there will be providing some code that will allow 'unlocks' to be written back to the STEAM server. From past experience (earlier editor experience) this code is fairly transparent and can be modified, but I can't recall exactly if it's done by communicating back to their server via API, this isn't my area and my bro is doing the heavy lifting here, so I'll have to have a chat with him.

I can't see why we couldn't modify this code (why re-invent the wheel) to call the the Steem.api as well.

In the first instance rather then writing to the Steem blochain I was thinking of doing something simple for a quick win, like reading... For instance if Steemians play the game and create a character with identical to their Steem ID, they get an in game bonus's based on their Steem reputation for instance.

Once we get this simple win on the board, proved the product and peek interest (and potentially get some support) we could look to write to Steem.

Right now our main focus is just building the game itself ( a product) as the priority and getting some test users etc - just to make sure people enjoy playing it.

We will then see what can be done re STeam and STeem sort of thing.

Once this is done It will have to be made Steam and Steem ready.

Thanks for your Discord contact; I'll flick you a message when i can - greatly appreciated.

Just be careful with reputation because it is generally considered an unreliable unprofessional metric, it is easily gamed with purchasing bot votes to up reputation. Look up Steem User Authority instead (UA) for now.

Aghh..Good point - UA seems interesting, but how can I know for sure the UA score isn't bias as well (not saying it is - but could be built into the algos).

I guess the point is I'll need to work out something reasonable and widely accepted - perhaps native SP for instance (also encourage powering up :)). hmmn anyways, some time to think on :)
