Blind Lady InjusticesteemCreated with Sketch.

I lived in Dublin for 5 years so I know it quite well but it wasn't until I took 2 German visitors on a walking tour of the city that I seen the little details that were right under my nose all along.
Blind lady justice that is the symbol of law and order throughout the globe is somewhat different in Dublin. I will explain so after we look at the original statute.

So here is the normal statute of blind lady justice. She looks out upon the city or town to offer the people of the city peace of mind that she is protecting them. She is blindfolded to symbolise blind from discrimination. Her weighing scales are balanced showing fairness. Her sword is down by her side. She has power but will only use when necesary.

So for those of you that do not know Irish history, we spent 800 years being ruled by the British Empire. This was not a popular 800 years with the Irish and there were many rebellions and uprisings. We finally acheived our independance in 1922. The English based themselves out of Dublin Castle in our capital city and in 1751 the statute of blind lady justce was unveiled. But there were a few differences..... Lets take a look.....

The second photo is the inside of Dublin Castle. Notice how her back is to the city. She is protecting the people in the castle instead. The English settlers.
She doesnt have a blindfold and she is smiling down at her sword which is drawn. There is a nice little 4 line stanza about our statute.

The Statue of Justice,
mark well her station,
her face to the castle
and her arse to the nation!

Isn't that just a glorious little reminder of our past with the British. I walked past lady justice every day and never copped on that she was unique. Now there are many country where the sword is drawn but she always looks out among the population to show her protection. I found this fascinating.

Wow this look so cool! Makes me want to visit dublin!

You brought a smile to my face @blanchy. The nation may be getting the best side. It is always better not to be deceived, even if the truth is not nice.

I lived in Dub for just over a year or so. As a brit motorcycle courier, I knew Dublin better than most.
That made me really popular.... lol

Pretty cool piece of knowledge. She wasn't very pretty so maybe they gave the Irish the best bits.

When I first saw the photo I thought it would be another funny story about Flood or someone else. But I'm happy I could learn something today thanks to your article. Well done and thank you! ;)

My last three flood posts were curie’d @erikah so Flood will be coming up again soon!! 😂😂

Ah Blanchy me aul flower, I did the Dublin Castle tour meself a few years ago also with a visitor and heard that interesting snippet of info for the first time after living here nigh on 35 years.

how much did you tip them @deirdyweirdy? Yeah it was some tour. They went to town on the English that day. They asked if there was any English on the tour. Two eldery people hesitantly put their hands up. Im sorry for what we will say over the next hour said the guide. But it was what happened. He then proceded to knock them at every opportunity. I had 2 Germans with me and they were smiling like chesire cats! 😂

That's gas. The fella I brought was a Brit too but I warned him not to admit to it, to put on a Yankie accent and just keep sayin' awesome.

ha! sir blanchy! that statue said it all, that was a great bit of history taught there, very interesting indeed. The English were cruel taskmasters or did it just depend on who was on the thrown?
