| When visiting Argentina in 2001, the country was in the midst of a deep economic crisis. The fixed dollar-peso parity exchange rate had to be abandoned. The country experienced high inflation and was struggling to pay its debt. During this time, the national and various regional administrations issued special bonds to the public to be used like money - the so called "Letras de Cancelacion de Obligaciones Provinciales" (LECOP, = Bonds for Cancellation of Provincial Obligations). | Als ich 2001 Argentinien besucht habe befand sich das Land inmitten einer schweren Wirtschaftskrise. Der festgelegte 1:1-Wechselkurs zwischen Dollar und Peso konnte nicht aufrecht erhalten werden. Das Land litt unter hoher Inflation und konnte seine Schulden nicht mehr bedienen. Während dieser Zeit gab die Zentralregierung und auch einige Provinzen besondere geldähnliche Anleihen an die Öffentlichkeit aus - die sogenannten "Letras de Cancelacion de Obligaciones Provinciales" (LECOP, = Wechsel zur Tilgung provinzieller Schulden). |
| The bill pictured is 1 LECOR, issued by the province of Córdoba. It expired on 31th October 2004. Until this date the regional government would guarantee to retain it for 1 Peso plus 7% annual interest. When I was in Córdoba, many shops were quoting different price indices for payment in "efectivo" (Peso) and LECOR that were subject to fluctuation (for example 100 vs. 103). | Der abgebildete Schein ist 1 LECOR, ausgegeben von der Provinz Córdoba. Sein Verfallsdatum war der 31. Oktober 2004. Bis zu diesem Datum garantierte die Regionalregierung die Rücknahme des Wechsels für 1 Peso plus 7% Zinsen p.a.. Als ich in Córdoba war, gaben viele Geschäfte unterschiedliche Preisindizes für Zahlungen in "efectivo" (Peso) und LECOR an, die sich wiederholt änderten (z.B. 100 vs. 103). |
