Stunning Adelaide Crescent

Overlooking Adelaide Cresent Gardens - Hove

This is a photo of the East Side of Adelaide Crescent in Hove, a couple of blocks from where I live.

A little bit of history:

Construction of Adelaide Crescent, named after Queen Adelaide, began in 1830.

The original plan was to build a single semi-circular crescent, although this was never completed. Despite this the first three houses facing the sea, and seven facing the Crescent, were either fully or partially completed by 1832.

Due to a general recession in the housing market work stopped in 1832. When it began again in 1850 the plan for a single crescent had been abandoned, and was changed to that of a square leading out of the crescent.

This is what you see today in it's original form.

The open space that the houses overlook form the centrepiece to the estate, and were originally private gardens for the residents of the properties. They also retain much of their original layout and character and are a good example of an early Victorian garden.

All the buildings in the crescent are now listed and thus protected, as are the ornate lamp posts.

What a megalomaniac building. Wow! Poor maids, they must have to work 24/7 to keep it tidy!

I expect there were plenty of them @trincowski and at least they would have had a nice sea view from their quarters. 😁

Awe Hove! Great place to live!

Such a beautiful building Gillian. Beautifully photographed. For a moment I thought you might have been in Adelaide in the land of Oz. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎

I've yet to visit Adelaide in Oz @allyinspirit. We never made it there on our trip but, at some point, I like to drive the Great Ocean Road. 😊

I'd give anything to be able to drive along the Great Ocean Road again Gillian. I lived at Lorne for a year, when I first decided I was going to be an artist. Was so very different in the off-tourist season when this most popular resort reverts back to being a village. I hope you are able to go there sometime too. With the Otway ranges coming down to the coastline, it's truly a beautiful area of Oz. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎
