Butch and Sundance: One More Brazen Holdup

in #history5 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in the middle of a series about two of America's most famous and successful outlaws, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In the last post we learned that the railroad was still willing to make a deal with Butch to stop the costly robberies of their trains.

But the boys were up to no good and obviously weren't interested in negotiating anymore. They were having a good old time stealing a bloody fortune from the banks and railroads.

Money talks

What's amazing to me is that apparently the railroads were so wealthy and powerful that they were able to offer amnesty to Butch and his gang regardless of the law enforcement system and what they wanted!

I mean Butch and Sundance alone were wanted in at least four states..Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico...probably Montana too.

So we have to assume that one industry had the clout to give them a legitimate amnesty deal, that just blows my mind! These guys had wanted posters out everywhere, the amount had grown to $5,000:

A daring robbery

It had just been three weeks since their last hold up of the Union Pacific train in Tipton, Utah. Now Butch, Sundance and William "News" Carver are at a saloon in Winnemucca, Nevada. They had parked their horses in an alley behind the First National Bank of Winnemucca.

After a shot or two of whiskey they left the saloon and sauntered nonchalantly(they were good at that nonchalantly stuff) to the bank. Carver had a Winchester rifle and stayed at the front door, Butch drew his Colt 45 and Sundance drew out his two 45's.

Too bad we don't have a front view of the bank but this is what the town looked like in this photo from 1905. The bank is the one story brick building on the left just beyond the trees and wagon:

Five customers were in the bank and were ordered to line up facing the wall with their hands up. Sundance guarded them. Butch told the teller to open the safe door and then Butch filled sacks with gold coins and cash. They then ordered the five customers out the back door into the fenced backyard.

Their horses were on the other side of the fence so Butch and News climbed over while Sundance kept his guns on the customers. After warning them not to move, Sundance vaulted over the fence as well and the three rode into the main street and spurred their horses.

Another perfect job

The main teller was able to get on shot off(epic fail) and one of the customers managed to grab a shotgun and fired a shot but that did nothing except blow a window out of the saloon! lol.

Of course, Butch used his patented tactic of using fresh horses along the escape route and they vanished into a wilderness area along the Idaho and Nevada border.

There were posses of course but after searching for over a week in the area they reckoned that the boys were long gone and they gave up.

A glimpse into Butch's character

An interesting story about this robbery is that the boys camped at a ranch a ways from town for a few days and became friends with the rancher and especially with a 10 year old boy who really liked Butch.

It is so typical for anyone dealing with Butch to really like the guy and enjoy his company because he was gregarious and funny. He was especially great with kids.

So anyway this 10 year old boy, Vic Button, really was taken with Butch and his super fast, white horse. Before they left for town Butch told him that the horse would be his someday. Well, that ranch was one of their stations where they had fresh horses waiting and when they got there Butch instructed a ranch hand to give Vic his white horse as a gift.

In later interviews Vic said "For a man, when he was crowded by a posse, to remember his promise to a kid..makes you think he could not have been all bad."

In your face

What's interesting about this robbery is that the boys didn't care if they were recognized or not because they didn't wear masks! I see it as openly taunting the banks. Of course, after these two jobs the banks and railroads were furious and increased the bounty to $10,000!

The boys made off with $32,640 which has a value of almost one million dollars in today's money. So they were rich again.

Their story continues in the next post.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

thank you mad curator!

Easy peezy for this lot. Looks like they could just rob anywhere and get away with it. That is$87 000 in the last two robberies alone. The railroad should have put a bounty of $50 000 alone to get results.

haha! Good idea sir cryptoandcoffee, that kind of fortune back then would have tested the most loyal of friends I would think plus have everyone in the world looking for them!

That was a fun write up to read! Thank you so much for entertaining me. May you have a great day!

Howdy there sgbonus! Thank you so much for the kind words and thanks for reading!

Cool that he gave the kid the horse! These guys had redeeming qualities, it's rather sad to know that it doesn't end well.

Howdy Melinda! how's your day been? Yes it is very sad, what a waste of talent. They still had some very good qualities!

Too many phone calls today with people checking in to see how I am surviving the storm! Don't they know I can't talk on the phone and make comments at the same time? I'm fine. Thanks for checking. Bye. But it never works that way!

haha! Who is doing all that calling? You have wonderful friends and family that want to make sure you're ok, that is so sweet and wonderful! But it's funny too! spoken like a true steemit addict!

Various family and friends who assume I must be lonely here alone and think I have nothing better to do than talk to them on the phone for an hour! Sweet and wonderful and I was making up excuses like.... you know what? I haven't had my lunch yet so I probably should get off the phone.

hahaha! That's too funny! For an HOUR you say? oh my gosh. And you can't think what you're writing and still talk at the same time can you? At least I can't. Some people can, or at least say they can.

I would start reading a post and then realized that I had no idea what the person on the other end of the phone was even saying. So I would have to quit reading and actually listen to them again. I didn't even try to write anything I knew I would be tempted to lay the phone down and figured that would just be rude!

Oh man Melinda, that had to be frustrating! Did you get behind? Well, I know you got behind, were you able to catch up is the question?

Another well written tale of two of the most notorious outlaws. Well done Lord Janton! These kind of stories remind me of the TV series I watched called Alias Smith and Jones, particularly the part about the amnesty. Slightly different take, don't know if you have seen that?

howdy again sir nickyhavey! now that is some ancient history there, WAY before your time. I had to look that one up because I remember the show was on but didn't remember the plot, that's a pretty cool plot, thanks for bringing that up! And thanks for the kind words!

I've often wondered if Butch and Sundance actually had a plan or just reacted to circumstances.

I have spent some time in modern day Winnemuca, I had a work contract based there for about 3 weeks in the late 70s. One thing for sure, there isn't much civilization for a long ways in any direction. It's the kind of place the boys liked to incorporate into their plans...

It's still a great series and I look forward to the next installment every day. Thanks Janton.

Howdy sir bigtom13! Wow, it's amazing that you know most of these towns and areas! lol. I mean what are the chances that someone would have spent time in that isolated little town? It's probably the same size as it was back then! thanks so much for the kind words sir bigtom.

By the way, Spring is coming, do you have any biking trips planned before it gets too hot?

Eh... Janton... they were never up to anything good! haaaa

howdy blacklux! I think they got tired of thinking of going straight so they just said heck with it, if we're going to be criminals we might as well get rich!

What a story!
Great line.
Time changes tactics kinda like the same.
Keep on postin

howdy sir pouchon! Thank you for reading and commenting! Yes sir the hearts of men are greedy now just like back then, I guess we haven't changed much!

Good day Cowboy! Another interesting instalment to the train robber story.
Amazing how Butch remembered his promise of the horse to the boy when his head must have been whirling with a posse after him. Is that called ‘Cool headed?’

Howdy redheadpei! yes Ma'am he had some compassion, especially for kids, I thought that was pretty cool too!

Obviously at this point, they are in it for the adrenaline rush more than the money. I bet they would have loved skydiving.

haha! howdy sir madgoat! Probably, I agree that they have an addiction to the lifestyle. Even if they know it can't end well!
