Daniel B. May: More Of His Story

in #history6 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

I've been talking about one of the unknown and unsung heros of the
Old West who was a Kansas farmboy(I can relate) who headed West
to make his fortune and ended up being a Shotgun Messenger for the
Deadwood Cheyenne Stage Line.

They only recruited people who were skilled with a gun and he was
also deputized as a United States Marshall. One of his first major
encounters came about when he got wind of rumors that the stage
was going to be robbed and he was even told who the perpetrators
were.

That's right, he knew who they were: Prescott Webb, Perry Wisdom
and G.W. Conner. How do you like Mr. Wisdom's name? He was
anything but! Anyway May grabs two men who were good with guns
and gutsy. They armed themselves up and got on the stage with two
male passengers.

Everything was set until a young lady with a small child came to get
on with them. May argued with her trying to convince her not to
come but she wouldn't listen to him and insisted on going.

I'm not sure what authority he had as a United States Deputy Marshall
but you'd think he could have prevented her from boarding by saying
that it was official law enforcement business or some such thing.

At any rate, she boarded and they were all sitting inside the coach.
Out on the road the thieves showed up of course, and stopped the
driver and stage.

May, with shotgun in hand, wanted to jump from the coach and fight
it out but his two companions restrained him and they reluctantly
submitted to being searched by the robbers who relieved them of
their valuables and weapons.

The 2 men with May thought it was too dangerous to confront the
thieves with the lady and her child there, they didn't want to risk
them being shot in the exchange of gun fire.

The robbers then debated openly about killing May, who had made no
secret of his hatred of bandits and his aim to hunt down every one.
Finally, they decided against executing him.

Showdown in town..

A few weeks later May and one of the robbers saw each other at the
same time on the street in Deadwood. It was Prescott Webb who
pulled his pistols and started shooting. A bullet hit May in the arm but
he returned fire, emptying both his six shooters at Webb who was
running, dodging and weaving his way down the street and wasn't hit.

Webb grabbed the reins of a horse tied up at a rail and vaulted into
the saddle and took off down the street. Sheriff Seth Bullock and two
deputies, drawn to the scene by the gunfire, opened up on the fleeing
Webb, striking the stolen horse and bringing rider and mount
tumbling to the ground.

Even though May had a wounded arm he grabbed a rifle from a
bystander and shot Webb in the shoulder. The fight was over but too
bad the Sheriff and Deputies had to shoot someone's horse!

Anyway May's arm wound was serious: the bullet, striking just below
the elbow, had hit a bone and split, one piece exiting the arm, the
other having to be removed by a surgeon. I bet the surgeon was an
expert in gunshot wounds! lol.

That day Webb told where is partners were and they were picked
up as well. They were all transferred to the Wyoming Territorial
Courts. The three went to trial but the jury was divided and decided
to acquit them and the judge released them, free to go.

Of course May was disgusted and I think his reputation as an outlaw
killer grew because it seems like after that trial the robbers were
usually killed instead of arrested!

Thanks for reading folks, more on Mr. Mays life coming in the next
post.

Well, at least he had the right idea...dispatch them before they went to court and were freed after the trial. He was just saving the tax payers money...LOL

hahaha! howdy cecicastor! I like the way you think! Well yeah I like the way he handled it, it was pure justice I believe. I mean if you have people who intend to steal from others and even kill people then those people need to be gone period.
Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

I believe in Western Justice. We do better that way. Upvoted.

Oh wow- what a hard nut May was - to carry on the fight even though that gun-wound had smashed his elbow! And you're right- you'd have thought that they'd manage to keep that bloomin' woman and child from getting in the middle of their plans... seems their gentlemanly credentials got in the way!

E x

howdy there eveningart! Yes, they literally risked their lives so she wouldn't be in danger, she's lucky they didn't kill May or it would have been her fault! Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Holy moly Janton! Your stories are like a reading a book! I was so behind, so I read all your Daniel Bone May blogs and upvoted too of course. Truly fascinating for an European individual like myself, lol. Heros like May were really something and I can totally picture all the scenes based your on your descriptions. It truly makes me think about the life back then. It wasn't easy, that's for sure!

howdy there Lena! well thank you for the kind words. I must tell you that I've done alot of Old West series and this is the worst I've ever tried to pass off as good stuff! lol.

I'm very proud of my others but not this one which is not nearly as interesting as say the Wild Bill Hickok or the Doc Holliday series but having said that I'm honored and thrilled that you like this one. Even though I consider it to be lame! lol.

I'm basically just treading water while I wait for a good research book to get here about Wyatt Earp, are you familiar with him? famous lawman.
I don't suppose you watch any Western movies?

Life back then was brutal in the Old West. I think their main drink was whiskey and their nutrition had to be horrible. The average life span was just 58 years old. If you got an infection you were probably dead because they had no anti-biotics or even penicillin.

But I talk about all this kind of stuff as I go along in different stories, trying to help people realize what life was like for the cowboys and such, the cowboys has been my specialty.

Thank you so much for your kind words, they mean alot!

I guess I missed most of your good stuff then, but as you say, you have some real hot stories coming soon. Lets just say that these as you call lame are the warming up stories for me, lol.

haha! thank you Miss Lena. Well, this stories aren't for everyone. I've had some complaints from Europeans because of the violence that went on back in the founding of the country and I talk about what happens and they don't like it but it's just history and I don't glorify it but most people want to hear about heroic action stories like my Doc Holliday series where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday took out the evil outlaws. I mean it was good against evil and kill or be killed.

So if you can handle the truth then you'll be fine. It took alot of violence to settle the country and that's just the way it was but I also talk about the Cowboy Code of ethics they had back then and how they honored and respected women and cultural things like that.

Because people don't know these things and many of those great values are the heart of Texas culture still to this day. Well, in the rural areas anyway, the cities are lost to feminism, social justice, liberalism and other leftist ideals, some of which are fine to a point but not to the extremes that they are carried to.

Hey janton, did the 2 men stop May having a shoot out with the robbers because of the young mother and her child? They could have laid low in the stage coach while the fight was going on. I can't quite understand why the 3 submitted to a search when their job was to do otherwise. I would;t have!

howdy angiemitchell! thanks for bringing that point up. I didn't make that clear enough so I went back and added an explanation about that.

Yes the 2 men with May thought it was too dangerous with the lady and her child there, they might have gotten shot by wayward bullets if the gun fire exchange had been made.

Oh my! Did his arm ever heal? Could he still shoot a gun or did he lose his job? Can't wait to hear!

howdy there Melinda! I was just thinking about you and wondering if we missed our time tonight! lol.
He did recover fully yes.

Oh, good to know! Trying to think if I have any important news of the day but I can't think of anything exciting at all. We are expecting our first statewide killing frost tonight, so I'm expecting things will look a little different out there in the morning. I covered my chrysanthemums hoping to buy them a few more weeks if it warms up again.

well I hope it isn't too severe, it's kinda early even for Wisconsin isn't it?
Here it's supposed to get down in the 50's so that's rather shocking for this place. lol.

Have you been following the news about the hurricane damage though?

This is pretty average for our first frost.

The damage is shocking, isn't it! We are getting such violent weather... It is rather terrifying.

yes Ma'am but you guys are far enough in the interior that except for flooding and tornadoes, which should be rare up there, there shouldn't be too many natural threats right?

I have always felt we are in a pretty safe part of the country. A catastrophic blizzard? Even that you have warning and can plan ahead. What about you you're pretty safe too, right?

well we are right in the middle of what they call Tornado Alley going through here up through Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and then it lessens quite a bit. I actually did a post about tornadoes and our Tornado Alley.
But that's about it unless we had a brush fire in a drought period.

A pioneer in every way... Great story man.

Apparently I missed the opening post of this series...I'll have to hunt it up! Mr. May's disgust must mirror the modern day disdain of the judicial system with serious criminals going free on technicalities lol

howdy there tamaralovelace! yes Ma'am this is just a short series that I started a few days ago, I'll probably wrap it up today.
I'm convinced that letting those guys off to go free made him just get the robbers when they tried to rob the stage which I agree with.

Hey did you guys get alot of rain from the hurricane? The devastation is horrible!

Not much out of it here...I'm in the central part of the state. I feel terrible for those that got hammered. The most we got here was a strafing of wind that knocked a chainlink fence down on the cars at work. Small potatoes compared to the panhandle

howdy again tamaralovelace..yes I feel for those in the Panhandle. I can't imagine how much it's going to cost and how long it will take to rebuild and so many people lost everything! But at least you guys are ok.

If you want to live in Florida I guess the place to be is the center like you are.

Hi @janton. Looking forward to the next one tomorrow. Hope you writing it already lol.

howdy sir cryptoandcoffee! yeah I'll throw something together, probably have one more post for mr. May, he wasn't famous like some of the other guys so there isn't alot of detailed accounts of his actions.
Thanks for reading and commenting sir cryptoandcoffee!

Great story. Too bad about the horse - that probably happened a lot when guns are a blazing at someone riding one.

Did the horse recover?

howdy there Oatmeal! The account I read didn't say anything about the horse but I bet it didn't recover. Someone had to be really upset to have their horse shot like that. I wonder if the town paid for another one?

howdy redheadpei! well, I thought that was pretty horrible shooting myself but I guess in the excitement people do dumb things! thanks for reading and commenting!
