Frank And The Crazy Old Badger

Another Hill Country scene where young Frank spent most of 8 years living off the land:

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in a series about Frank Hamer, Texas Ranger, who was one of our greatest lawmen and some say THE greatest.

So far we've learned about his upbringing and his unorthodox lifestyle of living in the Hill Country by himself for weeks at a time while he studied nature and honed his hunting, tracking, and survival skills.

Today's story

When Frank was 16 years old his father moved the family to Regency, Texas which is about as close to the center of the state as you can get, the year was 1900:

Regency was a tiny little place, a brand new town with just 200 people, a general store, a church, and a flour mill. It was there that Frank met a crazy old badger named McSween. McSween was a farmer with 340 acres and was known as a "hardcase" around town.

In other words, he was an S.O.B. that no one liked.

But the old guy needed help with his farming and Frank needed money and a job(he quit school after the 6th grade) so he agreed to farm the old butthead's land in exchange for half the crop at harvest time.

Frank the hitboy

Well, when he wasn't working the fields Frank sometimes practiced his shooting. When McSween saw that he was a dead shot with a pistol, rifle, and shotgun he asked if he would like to earn $150.

That would be the equivalent of about $5,000 in today's money so back then it was a lot.

Seems there was a local rancher that McSween had some kind of run-ins with and wanted him out of the way so he told Frank he would pay him to shoot him! Young Frank was in shock.

He told old grumpy that he was planning on being a preacher and didn't think he could be a preacher and go around killing people!

Unfazed

McSween wasn't deterred. He said "Well if you're on that kind of bent, I'll give you $200 to shoot him. Of course Frank told him "No way!" and not only that but said he was going to warn the rancher and tell him about McSween's proposal to have him shot.

That's where the conversation ended but while Frank stormed off McSween shouted after him that if he told a soul about this "he'd kill him!"

I think their friendship might be over but we'll see what happens in the next post.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

PS- Ready for some cool weather, we've had unseasonably hot weather here for weeks and that's on top of the normal hot weather. I just want a mountain cabin to escape to in the heat of the summer, is that too much to ask?

Howdy esteemapp and thank you for the great platform and the great upvote!

It was cool enough here today that I'm wearing a sweatshirt. Glad to hear Frank's morals were strong at a young age!

A sweatshirt! wow, it was 100 again here. I think our average daily highs for winter down here are about 50 degrees so it's great outside working weather. They're too short though and yours are too long!

I'm seeing a lot of 70s and 50s this week. I'm not complaining!

You need to come up for a visit!

I would love to come for a visit this time of year!
I finished season 6 of Longmire last night. Holy smokes! That was the best ending of a series that I've ever seen, wow, what a magnificent job they did. I was shocked that Walt retired and even more shocked that Cady was running for sheriff! lol.

It is a fantastic show! Jim bought me a T shirt that says It's A Beautiful Day At The Red Pony Cafe And Continual Soiree. I love it.

lol! Oh, that's perfect! I think they could keep making them but if they were following the books and that's where the author ended I guess I can see why they wanted to stop when the books did.

I love Henry. Did you know he is from the Philippines? I am just glad Netflix picked it up and finished it after it was canceled by A&E.

Howdy again Melinda! Yes I knew he was and I was surprised when I learned that fact awhile back. But I didn't know that Netflix picked it up from A&E, I'm so glad they did too.

It's amazing how many American Indian actors they used! I'm sure no other show has hired so many!

I may not be awake much longer but come chat when you have time. I need to build my numbers!

"Can't be a preacher and be killing people." Hahaha. Reminds me of A Million Ways to Die in the Old West where that was a serious talking point. OMG that movie was too funny. I think I need to go watch it again.

Howdy sir wwwiebe! I keep hearing that movie mentioned, I didn't see it but thanks for reminding me. I wonder if Netflix has it?

Hi janton, and it is never too much to ask for such a little thing as that 'mountain cabin' so start manifesting - you never know!

lol! I'll put it on my list then and start thinking and day dreaming about it!

Beautiful land!I wonder where Frank is in
this life time!

Thank you sir kaminchan, I agree. Well hopefully if he is here he should be a great law enforcement agent. Is there any way to find out?

Would love to know how to find out! I think you’ll have to ask a strict Tibetan Rimpoche who could use his third eye!

Are you really into this psychic aspect?!
Most people thinks it’s rubbish.

Howdy sir kaminchan! No, I'm not into it but there are so many things about the spirit world that we don't understand so I have an open mind. What is a Rimpoche?

Nice to know that you have an open mind about things we don’t know. I also think likewise! A Tibetan Rinpoche is a highly esteemed Buddhist monk who has could determine his reincarnation as his meditation level is very high. These monks are super-psychic, they could possibly communicate with UFOs and spirits or ghosts. Some could see our past lives and know about what is to come!

Cheers.

Very interesting sir kaminchan! But I bet there is very limited access to such Rinpoches right? So you think UFO's are from other planets or just other dimensions on earth?

Yap! Very difficult to get near a high ranking Rinpoche.

From what I read, some UFOs live in the ‘hollow earth’ long time ago!
Dr.Greer actually communicated with visiting UFOs from other galaxy! Check out his work! Very interesting!

How would I do that sir kaminchan, just google Dr. Greer? I've heard similar things before too.

Howdy Sir @janton, interesting and McSween sounds like somebody that needs to be posted. Maybe Frank is the one to do it and we will see what happens in your next post.
Blessings!

Howdy sir papilloncharity! What does "posted" mean? lol. I haven't heard that term except when we publish posts!

Just take a trip to Minnesota. We'll hook you up with some chillier temps. The high temps have been bouncing from the 80's to the 60's for the last week, and it's looking like more of the same for the next one.

Oh well that's a great time of the year up there, for temperatures, I could handle that, that would be a good time to visit!

Farming the land for half of the crop at harvest time sounds like a great deal. Sorry to hear that it has been hotter than usual there. You know how much I hate the cold but that mountain cabin and the surroundings in that photo is gorgeous. Maybe this will cool you off some...it has been in the low 60's here at night and low 50's in the mornings here for several weeks. The leaves are changing colors already. Fall is in the air. Try to stay cool @janton! : )

Wow 50's and 60's! That sounds perfect. I love our winters because those are the normal highs in the winter time, perfect for working outside. But I'm sorry to hear that the leaves are already changing! Dratts, I don't want you to have to go through another brutal winter with all that snow shoveling.

Oh, how I wish we had your winters. Lucky you! Dratts?!?! I don't think I have ever heard that word before. LOL! Aw, thanks for your concern about me. I can't even think about that dirty 4 letter word...s**w, and I can't say it either. That is how much I despise it. But I am happy that you don't have to deal with it. : )

I used to love it actually, grew up with it and so forth, just never liked driving in it or the ice. So I could use a little of it now but that ain't gonna happen.
lol..dratts..that's like saying "darn" but you already figured that out.
