The Gem That Sparkles Yet

in #history5 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas! My series of the famous female outlaw Belle Starr is coming to an end because in my lost post she was shot in cold blood and died in the road. She was only 41 years old.

Her husband, July, was sent a telegraph the next morning and told of her murder. He was in Fort Smith to appear in court about a horse theft charge but was able to make it back home that evening, Belle's body had just been brought back to her cabin.

Her friends prepare the body

A group of ladies from the neighborhood, her friends, prepared her body by washing it and anointing it with terpentine and oil of cinnamon. They dressed her in her best riding outfit and placed her in a wooden coffin which was lined in black cloth with white lace.

She was also laid in with her arms crossed but with one of her hands grasping the handle of her favorite revolver. That's something you don't see these days, being buried with your favorite pistol!

Her grave was dug in the rocky ground right there in front of her cabin with pick axes and shovels. The next day the funeral was held but this is not like one I've ever heard of.

The non-ceremony funeral

There was no priest, minister or any religious leader who lead a ceremony. In fact there was no ceremony at all which really surprised me since she was married to a Cherokee man and she was on the reservation and had many Cherokee and Choctaw friends.

The coffin had been sitting in the cabin when a group of grim, heavily armed Indians brought it out and laid it beside the grave and set the lid aside so people could view the body. The Cherokee who were there each dropped a piece of corn bread in the coffin as in tradition with an ancient custom.

There were a great variety of people there...white's, Indians, some of the outlaws which Belle had helped over the years. After her kids, Pearl and Eddie, had spent some time alone with her the lid was put on and her body was lowered into the grave and covered up.

The grave site is still there today and is on private land but I think you can drive down the road and visit it, there are road signs which point the way, it's close to Stigler, OK.

Here's what it looks like today:

That plain tombstone isn't supposed to be plain. In fact you can see bolt holes in the bottom where another piece used to be connected to it. Pearl had a sculptor carve a marble tombstone which I show below but it's been removed. I hate to be a pessimist but I think someone probably stole it.

It shows a bell and a star and that is Belle's favorite Mare, Venus, along with an inscription written by Pearl which I found extremely beautiful, interesting and full of faith which reads:

"Shed not for her the bitter tear,
Nor give the heart to vain regret;
'Tis but the casket that lies here,
The gem that filled it sparkles yet."

Her story is not over yet and will continue on the next post.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

well howdy there esteemapp and thank you for the upvote and for helping so many of us!

Morning janton, nice to know that Belle had friends and yep I reckon her tombstone sculptor was stolen too. Can just imagine what Belle might say, lol.

haha! yeah she might have some choice words or a bullet for someone low enough to steal a tombstone.

Haha, would make a good story to write about, lol.

hah! yes Ma'am it would indeed!

What a beautiful poem. I ma wondering about Pearl and the relationship she had with Bell. It seems like she loved her despite the issues they were having. I am very sad :(

Well Miss Lena it is a sad story indeed and those two had a rocky relationship because Belle was such a control freak. You're not going to like how it goes for Eddie and Pearl, just want to warn you. More sadness.

Oh boy!!! I don't know if I can take it :(

And yes, I know their relationship wasn't great, mainly because of Bell wasn't the model mother since Pearl was born. However, I can tell, Pearl loved her despite all that. I am just wondering about moments they had when they were happy.

yes Ma'am Miss Lena I'm sure they had some amazing times, we know that Pearl loved her because she moved back in with her and she didn't have to do that. You can take it, I'll try to go as easy as possible! lol.

This whole Bell saga, took me by surprise. It was nothing like I expected and with such a sad ending. Your writing is always great Janton, but what is sad is sad. Oh well, I will read it and deal with it. What can we do, history is full of sad stories!

yes and there is a lesson in this because if she hadn't been a criminal all those years she wouldn't have had enemies and she treated alot of people badly and harshly and made enemies. So it may have been someone other than Watson who killed her, there are other theories of who did it but I didn't get into them because they were never proven, just like Watson's case. But she did have a few enemies who swore they would have her killed.

That's the problem with stories about outlaws. The only one that ended well was Cole Younger's but even he had to do 25 years in prison. The outlaw stories are interesting until you get to the end and they never end well.(except Cole's, he had a good ending.)

Yes I agree, Janton, because as Jesus said you live by a sword you die by a sword. The good news is, that she change her ways before she died and that was good for her soul.

Yes I keep quoting that about living by the sword for these criminals. I think she may have been saved or at least her daughter thought so because of that inscription that she put on the tombstone, that's what made it so beautiful. At least I took it to mean that, maybe I'm just in wishful thinking mode!

She was far too young, but she certainly lived life her way. That is awful that her tombstone was stolen. What could anyone hope to gain from that?

well I don't know for certain that it was stolen but since the place is isolated out in the country and she was famous I just think it was. I'm asking a few readers if they would rather hear stories about a famous outlaw or a famous lawman. I have books about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and I have them about Wyatt Earp. Or would you prefer neither? some other subjects. how are you tonight? dang you did good on the League were you happy with that? 700 comments! I've won with 700 and something before..we smoked em on comments!

I am trying to be happy... But those numbers show that it is really not about engaging. It's just about making really long comments to a handful of your friends. Right? Your numbers are really well rounded.. Every category is great. Actually I was discouraged and am planning to spend my time reading and catching up on some TV this week.
Glad we finally got our leaderboard prize money today! That helped cheer me up a bit. That cheater guy got his prize money, too. They have asked me to verify the list next month before it is published. I guess they felt that they couldn't take it back after already declaring him the winner.

It is sad to think that somebody might have Belle Stars tombstone sitting in their living room or hidden away in their basement.
I'm still going with Butch and Sundance. But you should go with whoever you want to write about! I have complete faith that whichever one you choose you will make it super interesting.

If you go over to the Advent contest up voting the comments of your friends will help them win! Hint hint!

Howdy tonight Melinda! well it's hard to tell with the League contest because Lynn told me that he changes the metrics around quite a bit so you're never quite sure where to put the emphasis. The time that I lost to ecoinstant is because he had a larger PS number even though I lead on all the others. And smithlabs has won with a huge CL number but not much else so I think it just depends. It's alot of work to hit a real high PS number though, well, it's ALL alot of work.

But considering how much you had going on last week I thought you did exceptionally well. It used to be totally about having long comments and that's why Glen dominated so long.

But anyway that esteem prize money is awesome for sure!
ok how does the Advent contest work? I go someplace and upvote your comment?

https://steemit.com/steemadvent/@esteemapp/day-2-steem-advent-calendar-2018-win-prize-everyday

And make a comment of your own. The votes can be 1% because it is the number of votes not the $ amount.

howdy again Melinda, I'm glad you keep remembering about this because I don't! Does this seem pretty close to the right numbers?

Yes. It does for me. I watched football all afternoon. The Packers lost to the Cardinals at Lambeau Field and after the game they fired the coach, Mike McCarthy. Not very classy of them, I thought they could have waited until the end of the season since at this point it really does not matter much who the coach is.

oh that's bad Melinda! to fire a coach at this point is just meaningless. Wow that's dumb. What does your son think? What did they do have a press conference about it?

I really enjoy these. I wonder what they did with the turpentine.
You are really good at catching us up in the beginning.

Are you going to publish these later?

I haven't thought about publishing them I'm kinda lazy that way and there are lots of books already about most of these characters. I never know how much to say at the first but in case someone has never seen any of the story I feel like I have to do a little bit at least. I don't know how they used turpentine and what the reasoning behind that was but I was surprised to see it.

I believe from listening to my uncle tell me he drank some cause one of the old guys said it would help him, they thought of it as a medicine. Lucky that didn't kill him.

wow I've never heard of someone drinking it! You're right, he's lucky it didn't kill him, that had to be horrible to drink! The only thing I knew it to be used for is paint thinner.

It must have been quite a bunch of diverse looking people there, glad to hear that she had so many native friends...

/FF

yes sir friendly-fenix well she had friends and also people who didn't like her on the reservation. For years they didn't like her running with outlaws and giving the reservation a bad name but she was also surrounded by the Starr clan who were all friends. But in the end I think they all came to together to show their respect because she had changed her ways. thank you so much for commenting.

You're right...that is a heartfelt poem written by Pearl. In fact, Belle Starr lives on even today, in legend and tale.

Howdy there tamaralovelace! Yes Ma'am she sure does. I think she's the only Old West character that I've written about who never shot anyone. I don't know if that makes her boring or unique! I'm thinking about what type of people to write about next, do you have a preference for a famous outlaw or a famous lawman. I'm thinking about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or Wyatt Earp. Or do you have a preference? I need to go over to your blog and see if you have some funny stuff!

Oh I kinda like the idea of Butch Cassidy, but I'm sure anybody you choose to write about will be well received!

howdy tonight tamaralovelace! Thank you for the opinion and kind words! Is the winter weather in Florida pretty mild? Rarely freezes and so forth right?

You're right..there is seldom a hard freeze. I really love the winters here, but am not so fond of the summers lol. How about where you are?

well we do have quite a few nights below 32 degrees but it usually is in the 50s for the worst of the winter so it's a great time to get the outside work done so I love the winters here too. Did you see that article about the NASDAQ is going to start listing Bitcoin on the exchange? That's huge.

Sounds like you should take a road trip over and see it!

Howdy sir simms50! yeah I've never really been one to visit famous gravesites. Too bad they didn't preserve her cabin though, I'm sure they would have no idea that it could become a profitable tourist destination in the future!
