The Jackie Robinson of Rodeo part 2

in #history6 years ago

howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas
where we have rain today! Thank God for that! With more chances
coming in the next couple of days.

I started talking about a great black cowboy by the name of Myrtis
Dightman who is probably the greatest bull rider that has ever
been but because of the racism in his sport in the 1960's thru the
70's he was denied official championship status.

He grew up on a ranch in Texas, his father was a ranch hand on a
large ranch, but the time he was 10 years old he was already
riding, roping, branding, and all the other things cowboys do.

When he was 18 he moved to Houston because he was tired of
working his tail off for someone else. I like his independence
there, don't you? He started going to rodeos and noticed they
didn't have clowns at many of them so he thought.."hey I can do
that!"

That's how he got his start in rodeos, and he traveled all over the
country doing his clown thing. Oh, for those of you who don't
know..the clown is a very important part of certain events, mostly
bull riding because many times when the cowboy is thrown off the
bull, the bull then turns on the cowboy and tries to do some damage
because he's furious!

At this point the clown, or bull fighter, as they were also known,
jumps in and distracts the bull from the cowboy who is many times
still on the ground, hopefully still able to move. As you can imagine,
this is another very dangerous job and the clowns are terrifically
agile, quick on their feet and also incredibly brave!

I've seen them slap the bull right in the face if the bull was standing
over the rider, then run like hell to the barricade! It takes a real
athlete and Mrytis was extremely good at it. Here is a photo of him
in 1960 working as a bull fighter/clown:

So he's working as a clown and noticed something odd. At least to him
because he's been around other black cowboys his whole life. He
didn't see any black cowboys in any rodeo. When he learned how the
rodeo associations were so discriminatory against black cowboys that
didn't sit well with him.

He decided to start riding bulls because he knew that black cowboys
were just as good as white ones. It was much tougher for him though
because there were no sponsors who would sponsor a black rodeo
cowboy so while all the white cowboys had sponsors and could
devote full time to their sport, he had to drive a truck for income and
ride on the weekends.

There were other disadvantages he had to overcome as well like
getting to the events. Professional cowboys flew commercial
flights or had their own planes. Myrtis had to drive which was
exhausting to drive all over the country plus he couldn't make
many of the rodeos.

He would drive until he got to a town, check in with the local
sheriff and tell them what he was doing, then sleep in the back
seat of his car! But you can't keep a good man down and he was
on a mission to break this idiotic racist attitude that had become
prevalent in the country.

Shoot, the Old West cowboys didn't have this kind of discrimination, it
was unheard of. The Cowboy Code.. all men are equal.
Look at this photo from the 1870's, black cowboys were even
Lawmen:

I know ya'll are busy and didn't come here to read a book of my
ramblings so I'm gonna pick up tomorrow at this point as Mr.
Dightman continues his fight to overcome racism and prove that
black cowboys deserve to be pro rodeo riders as much as anyone.

It was his destiny and I believe it was his calling. Remember guys, if
God has called you to do something and you feel that calling in your
heart...then no man, no mountain, and no obstacle can stop you!

thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

ya know...you might just be a redneck if:

you ever lost a tooth opening a beer bottle!

I don't think you could pay me to jump in the ring and purposely get the angry bull to go after me. It's just not what I think is a sustainable career.

Why wouldn't you use a bottle opener?

hahaha!! Blondie you're too funny, a "sustainable career!" lol. it's not for when you get a little older that's for dang sure. The bull riders are teenagers and up into their 20s and if you hit 30 and still riding that's considered ancient and should be out to pasture.

bottle opener..hahaha. . why use that when you can use your teeth?

lmao

It's just not what I think is a sustainable career.

Pure awesomeness right there @themanwithnoname ~ love it!

Haha..I literally laughed so hard reading this

Looking forward to hearing the rest of the story, @janton. He had every right to want better! The rodeo clowns/bullfighters are indeed a brave bunch. I certainly wouldn't want their jobs!

Still praying for you Sister!

Thank you, @smithlabs. We are still suffering with awful weather here...

Hope it is not hurting your garden! Please stay safe! :D

The garden is surviving so far...

Good, that is process critical! All quiet? Things will iron out with time!

Man, I would love some rain here. Dust, dust, everywhere with all these trucks driving around.
The crazy things people do for money huh? All because other people are willing to pay money to watch. They may be good at what they do but I still think they are nuts. Do they do anything to get the bulls to kick around, or do bulls naturally not like having a rider on them?

hey don't worry about the rain, in a few weeks the place will be covered with snow! these people are really crazy. I think alot of them start out thinking(because of the money that can be made) they'll just ride a few years and then move on to something else. but then they get addicted to the competition, the limelight of the crowds, the money, the lifestyle, etc.

The bulls naturally do NOT want anyone on their backs. But to make it worse these bulls have been bred over the years to be the best and most violent buckers and fighters, the baddest and meanest!

They say this winter is supposed to be cold and dry. I wouldn’t mind that! It’s a funny thing what fame and fortune does to a person!

cold and dry? fame and fortune? you mean you want it to not snow so much so your fans can come see you?

Hahaha! No, those were supposed to be two unrelated thoughts. The fame and fortune was directed towards the bull riders.

oh ok that makes sense. Yes people, especially young men, get addicted to fame and fortune even if it cuts their lifespan!

The one I like is you might be a red neck, if you have ever been to drunk to fish...I know that guy, LOL!

Sorry he had such a rough time! Bull Riding is hard at the best of times!

Hi @janton. I am really enjoying your posts. I think those guys are crazy fooling around with those bulls.

howdy sir cryptoandcoffee..yes sir, they are certifiable if you ask me and the bulls are mean and nasty, bred that way! thank you sir.

Awesome picture of him distracting the bull. I look forward to more 😎

howdy there squirrelbait! I know, doesn't it make you want to be a rodeo clown?

yeah right! I'm crazy but not THAT crazy LMAO

Listening to your intuition and following your dream is what Myrtis did - a truly remarkable man janton. It is amazing that there discrimination against skin colour happened and is still happening in this day and age.

yes Ma'am racism of any kind is so stupid, I can't stand it. and it's still all over the world.

It was his destiny and I believe it was his calling. Remember guys, if
God has called you to do something and you feel that calling in your
heart...then no man, no mountain, and no obstacle can stop you!

Right on <333 Looking forward to learning more of Mr Dightman's trail blazing journey. He is one badass dude! So much love & respect :)

Good story, I liked it. Looking forward to the next one. Clown at rodeo, hmmm tough job. Opening beer bottles with your teeth, that’s crazy. Unless you have a great insurance that includes dental. 🤣

haha! you're pretty funny starjewel! yes, clowns at rodeos have to be super athletic, quick on their feet, and brave! opening beer bottles with your teeth is a common redneck practice! unfortunately! lol.
