Martin Luther was a Catholic monk from Germany. In 1510 he visited Rome, the home of the Catholic church, and was deeply shocked. He saw the Pope and his household living in great luxury, and realised the church was bloated with wealth and power. Luther nailed his list of 95 aguments against the church's sale of indulgences to the door of Wittenberg Castle in 1517. His ideas quickly spread across northern Europe. He begged the nobles of Germany to help him reform the old religion. This alarmed the Pope, who sent an order declaring that Luther was a heretic.
Fact file
During the Reformation the Bible became available for all to read, thanks to the new printing technology. Also for the first time it was translated from Latin into local languages.
