Towns in greece were a centre for goverment, religion and trade. In the marketplace farmers sold produce such as cheese, wheat, meat, eggs, sheepskins and olive oil. Fast-food sellers did a brisk lunchtime trade in sausages and pancakes. In the dusty lanes around the maketplace, skilled craftworkers carried on their business. They included sandal- makes, potters, tanners (who prepared animal skin), armourers, blacksmiths and jewellers. Wherever they settled, Greek farmers relied on three main crop: grapes, olives and grain. Most colonies were near the sea and fisherman sold freshly caught fish in the markets.
