During the Renaissance period scientist and inventors were making important discoveries. They were asking questions which would change our view of the Earth - and the Heavens - forever. Of course not all the inventions actually worked. The great artist and engineer Leonardo da Vinci was determined to find a way of making people fly like birds. Throughout his life Leonardo da Vinci drew many designs for flying machines. Among these was a kind of parachute and a helicopter with spinning blades. His grandest idea was for an aircraft with flapping wings, which he dreamed up in about 1503. He organized a test flight but according to legend the machine crashed. The first successful aircraft did not actually fly for another 400 years so he was certainly well ahead of his time.
Fact file
Galileo Galilei was both an astronomer and a physicist. His observations about the heavens helped to confirm the ideas of Copercus.
