Why were viking longships crutial to their raids?

At a time when sailors dared not venture far from the coast, the Vikings boldly sailed out, far across the Atlantic in their small open longships. The Viking longships were fast very strong. They had a long slender hull with a single mast and sail and were very adept at crossing the oceans. During the 8th century the Viking people began to leave their homes in Scadinavia and explore Europe in search of treasure and explore Europe in search of treasure and places to settle. The Viking invaders are remembered as ruthless raiders and their routes took them throughout Europe and beyond.
