It may have started somewhere else first and we copied it.
Commonwealth is the PC name for the old British Empire.
In the early days (1600-1700) the explorers found bits of the world like Canada, Australia, NZ, Nigeria could have been one of them. They took over as a Conquering Nation will introduced English Law and language and in most cases, improved the wealth of the country.
On the old maps of the world, the British Empire was always coloured red, and the places were so spread that " the sun never sets on the Empire" was the claim.
Now, most have separated from England, but retain a Mother/ Child feeling.
We still have the commonwealth games to celebrate this part of history.
The nex award is the British Empire, dating back to that time.
