Do Improvements In Quality Of Life Make Us ‘Weaker’?

I’ve often pondered this topic. I’ve struggled to find the correct answer, or if fgeee even is a correct answer. Clearly the higher standard of living brings forth the luxury of not having to worry about basic survival necessities. The more well off a culture is means the more time for leisure and less worry about safety and a proverbial roof over one’s head.

To improve one’s place in life, one must make sacrifices. If life is too easy the sacrifices of others may not be appreciated as much as they should.

I found a great quote by a German military historian, Wilhelm Balck. He said :

“ The steadily improving standards of living tend to increase the instinct of self preservation and diminish the spirit of self sacrifice.”

This quote may seem applicable to our modern age but it was actually written around the year 1900.

Perhaps some things never change. Perhaps some questions never are answered.

Sort:

Life isn't easy. In fact it's harder than ever. Because we can acquire basic needs so easily, we now end up setting goals that are unachievable. Since they are unachievable, we become stagnant.

That’s an interesting way of looking at it.

It is not the increase in the quality of life that makes us weak, but the increase in comfort. The quality of life may increase, but as long as we don't stay in our comfort zone, the human will always be strong enough.

Good point. It’s unfortunate but not surprising that so many people are too scared of getting out of their comfort zone and reaching their potential.
