The Treasure Cave of Pedro Nevarez - 9

in #history5 years ago

Later in life, Ben Brown would attempt to get funding to buy excavation equipment, after being defeated by the tons of soil blocking further progress into the old mine shaft. Unfortunately, the money never came through. Brown was now earning a good living mining tungsten and perlite nearby, and he stayed away longer and longer from Nevarez's cave.

In the late 1940's Brown sent a letter to Campa, asking for another meeting. Apparently, the old miner sensed his days were drawing to an end and had information about the treasure that he wanted to pass along. Dr Campa, however, had become to busy with his teaching duties at the University of Denver, and couldn't get away. Ben Brown died soon after he sent this letter.

We are left wondering what information he had to reveal, and if he ever managed to break through to the stacks of silver coins and piled Church treasures stashed by Pedro Nevarez and his gang in the 1640's. Most people don't believe that he did, and the hunt for the elusive horde continues in southern New Mexico to this day.

Interesting to read about

Oh wow! I was thinking that maybe he got it all out. That is super crazy that all of that stuff could just be sitting around out there somewhere. It makes me want to quit my job and go take a look :) From the map New Mexico looks like it still has huge areas of undeveloped land for whatever reason. I guess it isn't surprising to think of the treasures that could be laying in wait out there!

Hoping for a different ending. Thanks @pinkspectre.

Just as I expected, no treasure, only a life lesson. Hahaha Sounds like Browns persistence, hard work and ingenuity paid off in another way - I.e. his mine of tungsten and perlite.
