Hong Kong Snapshot (97) MTR, the HK railway system

in #hk6 years ago (edited)

Last time we talked about the Kowloon-Canton Railway of HK (KCR). Today let’s talk about the history of HK railway! Hong Kong is an international city and rapidly grew since 1960. But I can tell you that HK didn’t have a good railway system until the 1980s.

You may know that Central is the core commercial district of HK, with almost all global firms, financial institutions located. The HK Exchange and Cleaning Limited is also at Central. But it’s funny that we didn’t have a Central station until 1980. Before 1979, There was only one rail in the New Territories from Tsim Sha Tsui to China. And there were no railway in Kowloon and the HK Island.

In 1964, the HK Government started to face the problem of public transportation. They proposed an underground railway network in 1967, with length of 51km. With a long time of adjustment, a railway system of 15.6km was confirmed in 1975. In 1979, the railway was opened. The ticket fee at that time was only HK$1. The underground railway system was called the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) and extended the network in the coming decades. In 2007, the KCR was merged into MTR also. Now, the MTR is one of the busiest railway system in the world, with length 230.9 km. the market share of the public transport market is 48.4%. Furthermore, the MTR now also operated the railway network in the mainland China including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, as well as London in Britain and Stockholm in Sweden.

The MTR stations are also one of the culture of HK. Every station got different colors as the main theme such as Yellow for Wong Tai Shin station (Wong means yellow in Chinese), Blue for Lam Tin station (Lam means blue in Chinese) and rainbow colour for Choi Hung Station (Choi Hung means rainbow in Chinese). For those “big” station, it is usually in Red colour, just like the Central station, Mongkok station and Tsuen Wan station. In recent years, there are more and more art galleries and artwork in MTR stations.

2 years ago, a couple from Ireland spent 1-year time to take selfies in all 83 MTR stations. But just a reminder that photo taking is actually not allowed in MTR station. If you want to take a selfie, be careful haha.

Fortress Hill – Why no fortress? It’s because the oven wave was bought from a HK home appliances store called Fortress….

Next time when you come HK and take the MTR, just spend some time to enjoy the features of the MTR stations!

If I remembered correctly, Hong Kong MTR is one of the rare train company to have profit. It has been quite some time since I visited :p like 20 years!

really? by the way MTR earns a lot! I also have the stock of MTR haha

Haha, lucky you to hold a piece of this cash cow 😂

I visited Hong Kong for holiday before. A very busy country indeed. My family and I did take the MTR system to travel so that we can visit my sister-in-law who works in the hotel as a manager. By the way, I am your new follower from Singapore. A little upvote for your effort for this article!

nice to meet you!

It’s convenient but always so packed and also broke down. Wish one day the company can improve the train and the system 😆 this is an informative article and love it ❤️

I think it's already better than the train in Europe haha
