The hardcore hodlers

in #hodl5 years ago (edited)

There are a lot of opinions and judgements of the "hodl" meme lately, starting off innocently through a typo on a bitcointalk thread, becoming a bit more anarchistic and believing they're really holding the future of money compared to the fiat that's been driving them into debt for decades, to getting a bit of a scammy vibe to it after the longest bear market ever.

Of course the bear market is going to be very long now, if you think about it. If you believe the middle part of the sentence above is true, if you've watched videos like this one from Mike Maloney:

or this one of Cold Fusion:

you may see where this is heading, add some hope and chance to it and you may be right, most of us who believe in information becoming value and the internet having its own set of cryptocurrencies they can choose from and render banks useless over time may be right. Alright cool, we were lucky to stick to crypto and put our time and money where our mouth was and we all may do quite well later if we hodl a lot, but does that make us true hardcore hodlers?

For this post I was mainly wondering about what could happen in the near future based off of chance and users who have done very well maybe being bored or forgetful.

So as we know the approximate supply of Steem by year 2038 will be around 750 Million with ~300 Million currently in existence. Let's assume 10% of current existing Steem belongs to whales who may have either made quite a profit on Bitcoin, other Altcoins or from Steem itself. Their Steem holdings assuming they don't care much what happens with it and don't actively use them could be anywhere between 0.01% to 10% and it could either be held liquid on a Steem wallet or on exchanges, or powered up, or powered up and curating automatically or powered up and delegating to dapps or bid bots for return.

Either way, assuming again those whales start doing really well with the rest of their holdings and Steem happens to lag behind again in the next bear market which if I remember correctly pumped 2 weeks later than most, which could've been due to a lot of users depending a lot on Steem and it having a big percentage of it's total in sell pressure during big moves or cause some traders mistook Steem Dollars for it first until they realized what they were buying. I have to apologize for these never ending sentences, I'm not the best at forming them properly. Either way, if their portfolio were to again go up by 10-100x and they see Steem sitting there not having moved much (which I personally doubt will be the case in the next bull run) what do you think they might take a shot at?

It's this theory of wealth for some people becoming distorted once you reach some numbers. If you have 100 Million and only $100k in Steem, doubling down in case you bought those 500k Steem for $500k would mean it'd only cost you $100k which would put your total investment to $600k and you'd now have double the Steem. Placing 0.5 Million out of your 100 (0.5%) does not sound like it'd be the worst decision if the outcome could be a new all time high (the now $600k 1 Million Steem becoming worth $10 Million at $10 / Steem).

Some whales will have forgotten about their stake completely, some may have lost their keys, some may look in every now and then just to see how things are going, some may have planned to let it sit there for the next 5-10 years, etc. Now imagine the same thing onto regular users who'll buy some Steem and just see where it goes. There could be so many reasons to throw some chips at Steem in the near future if and when the unstoppable, forever evolving, no borders, no limits, crypto evolution continues in this path:

That sentence in the middle did have me reading it 3 times but I understand what you were saying.

The only thing that would cause anyone to sell and not hold would be bailing on a sinking ship, or packing up for a faster ship.

Me? I vowed to increase my stake and contribute to the block chain until the time my stake is worth something considerable and could change my life.

I am a long way from that and this is the best time to invest. Not to make immediate profit but to increase that stake.

Hodling is my only choice and will pay off huge with steem.

hahahaha! This one was great. I didn't even realize it until someone didn't point me into that... Now I try to rewrite it- but just end up watching :D so many things to say, so little dots :)

ifs and weres... I think of blockchain as of technology that is far superior and I don't need to see people to do money transaction - the best thing ever.

BTC is slow - it takes an hour for transaction. Try going to the bank, 30mins, waiting in a queue - leaving all the data, and actually need to talk to stubborn and evil people (devil in the human form would work in a bank) - and actual transfer happens a day later :D

No matter the price it could be used for easier life :) but when the price starts going up I guess we'll be enjoying a bit more than the rest - after all these dry months and lots of anxiety. :)

I don’t know why it took me this long to realize what your little animated gif at the bottom was. Lol

I always love reading your thoughts and visit your blog several times a week. Feel like a dunce just noticing it now. Lol

TL | DR

Invest in STEEM, believe in crypto,

Do your part, but do it smart

Will be interesting to see the charts 10 years from now and see this bear market as another blip in the charts!

I think Steem has a bright future or it would have collapsed long ago.
We know crypto is here to stay according to a renown Futurist I quote in a recent post.

I am here for the ride. Fiat currency has to crash.

As years go by, I wonder what will be the consequences of dead users that don't leave their families with access to their stakes. The combination of auto votes and dead steem users makes for some interesting numbers.

2036 is not that far away anymore... We are closer to 2036 than to the 2000s and a lot of things can happen in that time!
