"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" - Not Open Mic

in #homestead5 years ago (edited)

So, it has rained for forty days and forty... no, wait, just four days and nights, but that is enough. This is "high desert" country. We get about an inch too much rain to be an actual dessert, but it is plenty dry. Except when it ain't...

Goodbye, Gravel Road!

We have our own little watershed here on the mesa. The snow is gone from our drainage. All this rain is bringing the snow melt into the rivers and they are flooding too, but that has no effect on us. The mountains are not melting into THESE creeks, this is strictly rainfall.

Culvert just can't keep up with what is falling right now.

That is the last culvert on public roads, but just around the corner more trouble is brewing. So little water normally falls on this section that there is not really any ditch on the high side of the road. There is one last culvert right at the edge of our property that takes any last rivulets and directs them under the road at the lowest point, right where it becomes private road. The high side just started pouring over top of the whole section, and that entire section of road is trying to pretend it is a creek now.

Swim for the island in the middle!

It is hard to get a photo to really show the damage being done. I can sit and watch the road wash away, and while it would be easy to say it is "little by little" this is a dead end, country road, there is not much here. Little by little will eat the whole thing away in pretty short order.

Now, my little flood is nothing compared to what a lot of folks are going through right now, but it is bad enough that I am going to be pretty busy the next few days. My poor cows have to doggie paddle to their feed trough, and that is very degrading for a cow...

It is supposed to be a pasture with a creek through it not a creek with a pasture under it.

At any rate, this is likely to be my only post for a bit, I am certainly not going to get an open mic entry in this week. I do have a little musical talent to share with you though, brought to you by my piano tuner who bravely forded the rising waters to tune my baby yesterday!
In answer to REO Speedwagon: You are right, you can't tune a fish, but you can tune her piano and that helps. 🤣

NAMASTE!

Hello friend, I am just seeing your comment on my last post today. We are well. They held Billy for 19 agonizing days before Hawaii decided not to extradite and he was released. We have a good lawyer working on getting the charges dropped in Hawaii. We spent the summer in Oregon but when winter hit we headed south. We have been in Mexico for four months now in a great little beach town north of Puerto Vallarta. I’ve started posting on instagram and YouTube as choosefreedom and will be giving steemit another try. Thank you so much for your concern and I’m sorry I didn’t see your comment sooner.

Hello! What a delight to hear the good news, so glad you saw my comment at all! So glad it ended well! A little jealous about the Mexico thing... LOL!

I'm sorry to hear what you are going through. I'm sure that you wish for more water many times but when it's too much you wish it would finally stop.

We usually have enough water here and luckily don't face such disasters but once we had such a strong shower that the ground couldn't take so much water within a few moments and all water was staying on the streets and on the ground. It was so scary and I wished that it would stop :)

I hope you will be able to fix all the damages very soon. Good luck!

Thanks for the kind wishes! That is sort of what happens here, the ground has a lot of clay so it cannot absorb much water. When we get a lot at once, it just gets messy!

That is wild, we actually had a bit of snow yesterday, this the latest I can recall that happening, I blame the solar minimum.

I keep thinking those global warming folks will get some sense frozen into them at some point...

When I put my winter coat on yesterday I was like "Damn global warming!"

So, it has rained for forty days and forty... no, wait, just four days and nights, but that is enough.

lol.

Of course leave it to the authorities in charge to direct water onto private property and let them deal with it. Go figure right?

Actually, while the culvert design was not great planning the road crew has been spectacular. We have been having mud slides on our highway for two days now, and those men are busting butt to keep that open, and they still took time to drive out here and assess the situation. Sometimes even I have to admit my tax dollars a ARE doing good things... rare as unicorns but it happens lol!

lol, that's good then, all's well that ends well.

Water, eh?
Can't freakin' live without it, but it sure is powerful and destructive sometimes, sheesh!

Yeah, it is pretty sad to watch it. If we could dam it up, we could irrigate all summer on it but around here, voles will chew right through earthen dams in a couple years. So we sit here and nearly drown, then we nearly bake. But without a bit of struggle boogie, the old dance of life gets rather boring!

A real test of patients. Hold tight.

Thanks! The rain finally quit, we are supposed to get a bit of sun today so things are looking up already!

My favorite part about getting our piano tuned is the "concert" at the end. Thanks for taking the video and sharing it. We have been getting a great deal of rain recently, too. We tend to just get potholes and puddles where we live, not the misplaced lakes and streams of your pictures.

Lol! Great description of the situation. I remember in geography learning about "entrenched meandering" streams. We have un-entrenched meanderers, it seems!
