2 Minutes with the Farmer: What Are Hedge Apples Good For???

in #homesteading5 years ago

Today on 2 Minutes with the Farmer I am asking you a question. What are hedge apples good for? We have thousands of them here on the farm and we cannot find a purpose for them. Please let me know if you have a secret that these green balls are good for.

Thank you for spending 2 minutes with me!

They just opened a factory in Monmouth,il. They take the oil from them for cosmetics, shampoos and perfume. They makeing biodiesel fuel from the leftovers. Everything used. No waste. No carbon footprint. O pollution. And they paying good money to bring them in. 180 dollars a ton or 10 each brought in by buckets! Awesome processing plant."

Very interesting. Thank you for the info

Good for target practice.

Now that’s a good idea!!

They’re great for chukin’... you could get two teams of adolescent-minded guys... give them helmets, goggles and trashcan-lids for shields... and play Osage-orange-capture-the-flag!!

We see those in our grocery stores advertising that they keep away pests, such as spiders. My parents gave them a try. Did they actually work? Hmm... I’m not so sure.

Ya I do not think they really keep peat away.

I have known these to help eith roaches. People cut them in half and set them around their house. The wood makes amazing knife handles!!

Also, hedge apples are great for denting the crap out of your car, or scaring the daylights out of you while driving and theyre falling haha

A knife handle would be cool. The wood is beautiful and hard as a rock. They would leave a nice dent in a car. Hope you all are doing well and having fun out on the west coast

Osage orange wood was once prized for its strength. An old saying goes a bow made from osage orange was worth a horse and two blankets. As a hedgerow it needs no protection from predation while it is getting established, apparently deer and sheep find it repulsive. I am starting some osage orange trees from seed but also do not know anything you can do with the fruits. Apparently the seeds are edible according to @mackmck .. that's awesome!

I didn’t think about it’s wood. We burn some but it sparks like crazy. It is a beautiful wood. Thanks for commenting

Those are it... Do you know what they are good for?

Wood brain.Meklura(Maclura pomifera).

  • immune system
  • cysts

Interesting

I had never even heard of them until just now. :-)

You don’t have them out west

howdy sir Farmer! yeah I've read about the insides being used for all kinds of things like one of your commenters said. In Texas they call them Horse Apples because horses love to eat them and the tree is the Bois D'Arc tree and the great Caddo Indian nation from Northeast Texas made the best bows from the wood of the tree because it is the strongest but most flexible and they would trade them to Indian tribes all over the nation. The wood is also very resistant to rot so farmers like to use them for fence posts.

But the best use of the apples is for targets because they explode real nice!

Great info. I am going to have to shoot one of them

Apparently you can eat the seeds either raw or roasted.

Will have to give it a try
