Frost and Chickens

in #homesteading6 years ago

Looking forward to a bumper crop may be your desire, but mother nature often has different plans.

In our video title "Tea for the Tillerman" we had prepared a garden for Onions and Potatoes which you can see here. Once the Potatoes started to come up they looked like this and we were quite happy with the results.

Unfortunately we had and evening of frost, and this was how the potatoes looked in the morning. We were expecting the frost and prepared accordingly, covering our peppers and tomatoes but it wasn't enough.

Here you can see our peppers before, and after. Here is how our tomatoes looked in the morning. The tomato loss is quite a disappointment as we had some nice heritage varieties which we started from seed. We'll plant new tomatoes in a day or so and we'll see if the peppers actually survive.

As for the potatoes, a little research has us feeling confident that they'll be fine. We hilled the potatoes and will provide an update in a future video.

As for the new chicks, here they are a couple of days old. After a week in the basement it was time to move them out the coop. Candy promised to keep them safe! Here they are after another week, starting to get a few feathers and no longer confining themselves to the corner.

Finally, here they are after another week. Get bigger, braver, and a lot more curious.

Hello, greetings about the planting is very unfortunate, above all, it hurts to have all the work planned, to choose the seeds, to plow the earth, the calculations of how much the crop will yield, always with the hope that the harvest is better than the last , we add to this the hours that are lost men, we only have to clean the ground and start again, Frosts are very harmful for plantings, we have 2 seasons here, winter and summer, however now it is difficult to fulfill the objective since it does not rain or it rains too much losing all the investment and hope in that crop.
The girls look very lively, and pretty, their plumage is changing according to their time to become very beautiful and good-sized chickens, to put quality eggs. Let's hope that the potatoes and peppers can compensate in some way the loss of tomato I congratulate you for your hard work and good by some side will come the abundance of lost planting. my regards and respect for you extensive to Candy, who takes good care of the girls. greetings in the distance @brimax

Having too much or too little rain can be more of a burden than frost. With frost we can cover our plants with blankets but when the ground is too wet their really nothing you can do. We keep you updated on the garden and the chickens. As always, thanks for your support!

Life cycles of plants and animals on the farmstead is always in the forefront. What a rewarding lifestyle, though....even with the losses <3 I adore the chicks lol

Anything that presents challenges usually is rewarding. The chicks really are cute. Before we let them outside they'll go from just the coop to barn access which will give them approximately 3 times more space to run around. After week or so of barn access we'll let them outside.....that's a funny time because they're so scared of the big blue sky!

Hello my friend how are you? nature is unpredictable gives us bad things but also very good, I know that you are going to repair all the damage although the losses hurt are going to recover in venezuela we say that there is no mal that does not come well, after this they will have a good harvest they will buy new seeds and recover everything again
the new girls are very big I like it a lot where this Candy taking care of them I adore Candy she is very intelligent, that good that the girls already go out in the open surely soon I will see them bigger
My admiration for you is great because you took care of your beautiful farm
I send you many greetings and your wife, especially a greeting to Candy

Candy has always been so good with our chickens. As for the garden you are right and we'll recover. Just a small set back in the big picture!

Amigo @brimax muy buen video, la mayoria de las personas debemos de empezar a seguir tu ejemplo y tener nuestras propias plantas en nuestro jardin y si es posible nuestros propios animales de granja como en este caso son los pollos. Regards my friend excellent job

It's true they should, but unfortunately many people cannot as they live in apartments or they have no land. I know when we lived in the city we rented a piece of land to grow our food on. Sometimes there is more than one way to skin a cat!

Hello Friend how are you? I see that they had problems with the planting but they are things that happen many times, it is not how we think and things go a little bit wrong

But not everything is loss at least the chicken are very good and big I see them very healthy and I think Candy is doing a great job taking care of them she is beautiful I missed seeing Candy

Surely everything will turn out well

All of our problems big or small can be overcome. Like you say everything will turn out well🙂

Friend can read on the blog of @anise your wife that they were having some problems with planting this year as it seems winter has not completely gone

The important thing is that they are trying to take care of these plants a bit so they do not get damaged completely, hopefully everything will go down and stop having those cold waves

The chicken are hot that's good now I see them very big and they look healthy keep up so soon they will be better to Candy and tell her that she does a great job with the chickens

@anise works unbelievably hard to care for and grow our food. These setbacks can be a little disappointing but we will easily recover with a little time and perseverance.

Brother, how are you? I am very sorry about the harvest that was really lost nature gives us surprises sometimes but thank God your experience in this field will help you recover what was lost and you will have good harvest soon and the bad will happen, I see that you have new breeding is fantastic they will also give you much benefit, wow Candy takes good care of the girls your pet is very smart
I send you many blessings greet your wife

Thank you Brother. You're right, nature is always throwing surprises at us. The key is how we react to these surprises. We'll just replant and harvest later hoping all goes well.

Candy looks so cute playing the part of an old mother hen.

Sorry to hear about your gardening loss. We've been having unseasonably warm weather this spring. The last two or three weeks we've been in the 90s almost every day. Some of the tomato plants even have early tomatoes starting to show up.

She is a bit of an old mother hen.....good call. As for the gardening issues, we'll recover and harvest later. We have another frost warning for this evening, fortunately we haven't replanted anything yet.

Hello friend,how are you?
After a long time i saw your post.I enjoyed to see your garden and chickens farm. really it is a good idea.I like this work.
Stay good...

How nice to see the growth of the new chicks, they are already much bigger and jumping from one place to another at all times, it's good to know that. Regarding the planting, it is really disappointing to see how the tomatoes looked, different from the previous day. I hope the next harvest you get better results and no mishap again.
