Fun with Fine Motor Skills
I think we can all agree that we want the very best for our children. We are constantly striving to teach, encourage, and support our children. We are surrounded by summer camps, sports teams, and countless other programs to help our children thrive.
With the pressure to make sure our kids are given every opportunity to learn, stretch, and grow both intellectually and physically, overlooking the day-to-day learning can be easy. However, if you're willing to slow down and take a look at the world from a child's perspective, you'll be surprised to find learning opportunities in the most mundane tasks.
We have traditional bath toys but when the kids expressed interest in pouring, I decided to toss their tea set in the tub. Then it dawned on me; there were other items that were also water-friendly that would present exciting learning opportunities during bath time.
Enter, PomPoms!
If you don't have pompoms, you should! Kids simply love pompoms. Not only are they colourful, they can also be whatever you dare to imagine but more on that later.
Out of desperation to keep my kids stimulated on a day where the weather chased us indoors, I threw them in the tub with some pompoms. These colourful little balls bobbed and floated away in slow motion which was curious for a toddler to observe.
Armed with scoops, tongs, and little boats, their mission became capturing the pompoms. This task took a considerable amount of concentration, patience, and fine motor skills to complete. Not only did they have to catch the pompoms but they had to figure out how to keep them contained as well. A few times, when intently focused on snagging one, their boat-holding hand would fall below the waters surface thus allowing their captured pompoms to escape. Curious indeed!
This activity turned a seemingly mundane bath into a challenging and exciting learning opportunity.
