Permit Applications Part 5: We Must Be Getting Close, Right?

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

Today is August 8th and we've officially passed the middle of summer. The days are hot and long but that won't last long. The end of August always signals fall and then winter shortly thereafter. We've had countless delays trying to obtain our permits and we're running out of construction weather.

House

Last weekend, we took a very last minute, very long trip to Saskatchewan for the twins to visit my Baba. We originally planned to work on the road but entertaining them quickly took over. We arrived in the wee hours of the morning and, needless to say, we were exhausted. We didn't do any of our paper work.

Fast forward to Monday, when we'd arrived back home. We took the day easy so we could recuperate and shifted into high gear once the kids were asleep. As we made our way through the permit checklist I noticed a point I hadn't really paid attention to before; Energy efficiency requirements.

Before long, we knew we'd be submitting this application another day later. We just can't seem to catch a break. Matt worked into the wee hours of the morning deciding on materials for the house and calculating their RSI values so we could submit a full report. The county needs to enforce this provincial legislation after all....

Permit Papers

I walked into the county office, papers in hand, confident that we had done our due diligence. At the desk, the county officer went through the pages confirming everything was in place. But wait! The drawings for the roof trusses and floor joists were not sufficient.

Months ago, I had contacted the truss company to inquire about their drawings and if they would be sufficient to obtain a permit. I was assured they would be enough. Now, here I stood, with insufficient paperwork. Despite how dog tired I was I immediately started firing off emails to get this issue resolved. There was no way I was going to let this be delayed yet another day.

Even though our truss company has been in business for 39 years they were unfamiliar with our request. Thankfully, they were still willing to work with us and sent us more detailed specifications within a matter of hours. I forwarded the email to the county and haven't heard a peep.

Now, I guess we wait. If we get our permits in the next two weeks we still have a chance to get our shovels in the ground before the snow falls.

Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Looking good. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Been a big help to me especially.

Happy to have been a help. 🙂

Soon! But not soon enough!? Do you think the delays are a country versus city related thing? We had the same frustrations building the house for my parents-in-law. Not just the permits but later the building supplies. So frustrating! Couldn't believe the incompetence and disregard we had to deal with

We have had issues at both the county and province level. The main thing slowing us down this summer is the provincial new home warranty. Which means changing counties wouldn't solve those issues. Also most other provinces have similar legislation....

Oh man!! Prayers up!! I was just in Saskybush too. I grew up there. Went back for almost a week to be with my grammies & lots of other family ❤ we travelled 8 hours. I am not familiar wit where you are? I hope the county pulls it together for you! And, that you're digging real soon. Your plot looks amazing. Is that a pond out front on the other side of your driveway?

We are in the Edmonton area and planning to build west of the city. Ha! We travelled 8+ hours too. Thanks! We love the property and really can't wait to get out there already. It's so beautiful. Keen eye! You did in fact spot our pond in the making! -Aimee

Ohhh cool! I thought that country looked familiar. I guess i assumed you're from out in Ontario for some odd reason. We really should plan a meet-up in the winter now i have connected with three Steemians from your area. Still none from mine!! Are you familiar with anyone Steeming in the Cowtown area? I know of a few from BC, two in SK, still no YYC!! Gosh, i hope you get that green light call today Aimee!!

A meet up would be awesome! We've been connecting with so many amazing people on Steemit; a few who are even surprisingly close by. I can't say I know anyone specifically from cowtown though. If something does get organized, please drop us a line.

Unfortunately, we did not get a green light call today. They did say that approval could take 1 to 2 weeks but I would like to know whether or not that extra paperwork I sent over was sufficient. Sigh... and the clock ticks loudly.

Thanks again for stopping by! Always happy to connect with a fellow Canuck! -Aimee

This could be the Canadian government's theme song now when it comes to how they view the people who live here:

We feel ya. They sure don't seem to care about hard working Canadians anymore. Getting this house started has been one roadblock after another.

Occam's Razor would suggest that is because it isn't owned by Canadians anymore. I just surfed across this so spread it far and wide:

Looks like a pretty intense read. I have saved it for later.

Cool... I got through it pretty quick. It's basically confirming my KA$H theories of religion--that the religion of money comes from those who controlled religion.
