Bee Combs Un-Cappings!!

Hey everyone, every time we harvest honey from the hives we need to un-cap the combs. This is achieved by taking a fork similar to a table fork and scraping it along the comb until the honey is exposed!

We then put these frames into the centrifugal spinner rendering out the honey. We now have a problem, opportunity I like to call it. What to do with all the un-cappings? We filter them out with a 2 stage sieve over night. The honey is drained off into the settling tank and the wax capping's stay behind.

Like Catnip to a Cat these are to bees, we feed them back to the bees. Here below we have the 2 stage sieve (a larger grid them finer grid) to remove all the large/unwanted particles!

Zoomed in you can see honey still present in the capping's albeit sitting overnight draining, big bonus for the bees!

On this property we have around 20 hives in groups of between 5-7 I deal this mixture of honey and wax up and feed it back to the bees. Within just a short 15 minutes of placing this down we have hundreds of bees veraciously feeding. Truly incredible to see and not 1 sting whilst filming.

Bees generally do not sting when feeding and only usually when their hives are threatened. Bees are very smart little creatures and know they have 1 chance to sting and sadly die thereafter so do not sting unless they absolutely have to!

This happened in such a short time I was amazed to see how fast they congregated fed on this and within an hour all the honey was totally sucked off everything. The wax was left and bone dry. The left over wax we melt down and sell. I will do another post on how we do that soonest too.

Below our second largest hive from where these cappings came. These guys are super productive, this is a very exciting swarm indeed. On our last harvest from this hive we got about 20 x 500 gram bottles of pure raw honey, incredible!
