Gardens in Early May - May 10, 2019 @goldenoakfarm
Crabapple buds
I’ve been working on finishing cleaning out, amending, photographing, and making notes about all the gardens around the house. Some of these will have to be moved for construction and I wanted a record of them.
South Herb looking west: thyme, chives, rose, Joe Pye weed, sage, mugwort, white sage, peony, wormwood, heliopsis, echinacea takes you halfway down
I started at the front steps and worked my way around the house. I had already done the East and South gardens.
South Herb looking east: lily of the valley, Russian tarragon, sorrel, meadowsweet, southernwood, flowering almond, turtlehead, bedstraw takes you halfway down
With the new house plans, this end of this garden will not be dug up. So I am going to have to amend the soil and put in new plants. The lilac at the end died and that will have to be taken out.
West Herb – from bottom: comfrey, marshmallow, tansy, catmint, lemon balm, elecampane, ends at faucet
Many herbs died in this garden this winter. It needs a lot of work.
West garden, from bottom: pink lily of the valley, daffodils, snowdrops, perennial foxglove, ligularia, spearmint, coral bells
This garden lost a lot of plants this winter. But the daffodils did the best ever.
New North, looking east, from bottom: pink lily of the valley, snowdrops, astilbe, ferns, coltsfoot, wood hyacinths, lesser celandine, hellebore
I lost a couple things from this garden: Newfoundland violet, Jacob’s ladder, and lady’s mantle.
New North, looking west, from bottom: trillium, sweet woodruff, snowdrops, ferns, hellebore
New North – red trillium, sweet woodruff, hellebore
New North – hellebore, ferns, lesser celandine
North Corner – from bottom: snowdrops, Dutchman’s breeches, lily of the valley, euphorbia, wood hyacinths, primroses, lovage, marshmallow, ferns
I lost all the Sweet William that has grown here for decades. The euphobia is hanging on by a thread.
North Corner - from bottom: snowdrops, Dutchman’s breeches, lily of the valley, euphorbia, wood hyacinths, primroses, lovage, marshmallow, ferns, anemones
Old North – from bottom: lily of the valley, hybrid spiderwort, Jacob’s ladder, lesser celandine, bloodroot, daffodils, marshmallow
This garden lost its forget-me-nots, most of its feverfew, all of its foxgloves, and some other things I had planted last year. Most of those plants had been there for a decade. And this brings us to the back steps where I had started a month ago.
East Shed – 7 Sisters rose
I made a start on the East Shed and got the rose pruned.
Some other gardens and flowers:
Crabapple buds just opening
East – lily of the valley flowering
New Herb – Row 5, honesty flowering
Quince in flower
This bush is going to have to move with the new house plans.
West Maple with tulips opening
East Lilacs, in time for our 32nd anniversary
East – bleeding hearts, lungwort
It was so dark and gloomy this morning it looks like night time in the photos.

We had lily of the valley and lilacs flowering on our 32nd anniversary yesterday. I carried them in my bouquets and wore them in my hair when we were married, from these same gardens.
Happy Anniversary! I love the photo of you on your wedding day. You are weeks ahead of me I think. The hostas are just starting to peek out of the ground! Have I told you I LOVE your gardens?
I think we 2 belong to a mutual admiration society for gardens. :))
Yeah, even though I am Zone 4 here, you are all that much north of me..... The good part is when YOU start posting photos and I get spring all over again. :))
The crab-apples and daffodils are such a stunning combination! 32 years? That's a very long time. Lily of the Valley is such a wedding bouquet flower, no? Evocative, heady and so seasonal. :)
