We Finally Got Our Potatoes In!

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

Hey, how is everyone doing today? It has been a very busy last couple of days on the homestead. With a couple of dry days, we have been trying to get as much of our garden planted as possible because, this whole next week, we have chances of rain and storms.

So, I am glad to say that we finally got our Kennebec potatoes in. In our area, it was always a good rule of thumb to get them in by Good Friday. The only issue is that Good Friday seemed to come early this year and that was about a month ago. Needless to say, these have been put in late for us, but when the weather doesn’t work with you, what can you do :)

So, they may not amount to much this year, but we are still hopeful. The patch itself is a little smaller this year, since we are changing the way we do our garden. Usually we have about five or six 100ft rows, but this year we have maybe eight 40ft rows. We are going to try planting things in blocks to make weeding easier and to be more efficient with the garden space. We were experimenting some more with the alfalfa meal in different plants and applied a heavy dose on the potatoes. Hopefully, we will be able to find out if it yields significant results, but only time will tell.

Home grown always taste better for some reason !!!! ;-)

Homegrown is the best! Especially when it comes to tomatoes because they have so much more flavor. Thanks for stopping by @mikegpo!

Thats a lot of potatoes!!! Glad you got yours in, I did mine last week. Hoping for them to show up soon.

It is, but its nowhere near the usual amount we put in. Glad to hear you were able to get yours in and hopefully they will start growing very soon. Thanks for stopping by!

Just planted mine on Friday: Dark Red Norlands, not mulched yet, so there shouldn't be weeding once it's done.

I have never heard of the Dark Red Norlands, but I am sure the mulch will help a lot with the weeds. We are putting several of our things in blocks to see if that will help smother out the weeds. Best of luck with the mulching!

I used to grow Yukon Golds but they at some point stopped doing well here. My husband is the one who eats potatoes, as I try to avoid nightshades. He selected the Dark Red Norlands. They have a dark red skin and white flesh, medium sized, considered an early variety. They've done pretty well here.
