Enclosing the Lean-to that houses the electricity systems on our Homestead!

Good afternoon Steemers!

Today I have been busy around our Homestead building walls for the area where our solar and diesel electrical system lives. So I thought I'd take some photos along the way to show you guys what we've been up to.

To start with we rummaged through the piles of scrap & old unused wood to see what planks we had at our disposal. To our amazement we found some nice long and fairly straight pieces of tongue & groove wood that I sorted into a pile sometime last year, I had completely forgotten about it so that was a great find! We then hunted for and found some thicker pieces that would work for some downward supports for one of the walls.

To begin we set to work starting with attaching the 2 support planks vertically at the back and center of the front wall. Next we measured and cut the tongue & groove wood to fit the gaps we had to fill. 30 - 40 planks and a lot of nails later we had completed one side.

Below is what the inside looks like after the first wall was raised up. We used polystyrene sheets on the inside for extra insulation and sound proofing (for that loud and obnoxious diesel generator).

With the first wall finished we then proceeded to crack on with building the next one. This time we didn't need to make any vertical supports as the planks of tongue and groove wood were plenty long enough to bridge the gap.

Some sawing, nailing and 15 planks later we had completed the final wall. We attached a gutter to catch the rain water and placed a large bucket underneath for it to run off to. We finished off the walls and made them look nicer by using some chestnut wood varnish so that all the planks matched.

We decided to keep the rear side open so that the fumes from the generator had a place to escape, as well as leaving ventilation gaps at the top of both the walls and the bottom of the side wall. You might also notice the little wooden trolley to the side of the building, that is also something I made earlier in the year out of scrap pieces of wood and some wheels on an axle that I found buried under some weeds. The trolley was very helpful in moving the large planks from the pile around the back to where we were working with them.

Once the job was completely done we sat down on the patio and had a lovely rest in the sunshine while we admired our hard work!

I hope you've enjoyed reading and seeing what I've been up to. I look forward to seeing your comments and making more posts like this in the future!

Have a great rest of the week everyone! Stay positive and keep on moving forward!

A good days work! It looks really nice too. Amazing what can be achieved with a bunch of second hand wood! You deserved that rest 😉

This looks awesome @magiccleatus! Great DIY work :)

Hi MC!
Excellent work - those batteries really needed that cover from the sun - nice one!

Upvoted and resteemed :D

Thanks @icedrum! Those batteries really did need covering, the electrician that came out to do repairs a while back had highly recommended that we get up some wall to protect them from the elements. He had also suggested making a polystyrene box directly around them to keep them insulated, but we havent gotten that far yet.

Thanks for the upvote and resteem!

Excellent - the shade should prove sufficient - the batteries themselves can get hot when charged hard so would not want to be to insulated by polystyrene too closely. They also need good air flow (to vent the explosive Hydrogen gas emissions which are inevitable ... never smoke near batteries for real!). Looks like you have it all under control nicely :D
