Homestead Landscaping! Banana Plant FAIL and New Direction

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

When you first start a homestead on bare land, your biggest concerns are going to be infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure. Things like water, food storage, energy production, maybe even shelter (home building) are going to take center stage.

We have now been on this land for over 5 years and it's time we start making the place beautiful. I want our land to look like a park. Nice lawns and greenery, mulched fruit trees, attractive landscaping. Amazingly, Pinterest is a great place to find ideas for projects like this. And Jaimie is an admitted Pinterest junkie.

We will continue to find new and attractive landscaping ideas to share on video. On this one, it was important to remember that we have open range chickens that love to scratch over every little piece of mulch they can find. It will be fruitless to set up nice landscaping if all your chickens are going to rip it apart looking for insects.

I think you will enjoy this video!

I was hoping that the banana plant would survive. I have 3 dwarf ones growing in pots, they are from Baker Creek. So far so good, they are growing slowing but still growing! I also want to thank you for using youtube for the videos...@dtube is horrible for me and almost never plays no matter which way I try to watch a video!

Bummer on the banana plants! Who knew Canada would have better growing conditions than where you’re at? The landscaping is looking sharp though!
I just started a little bit of landscaping this summer. It’s going to take some time before we reach that peaceful oasis look I’m going for!
Off topic question: any idea where @shalomacres and @hansjurgen have been?

I saw Tim in the background of the video but I have been wondering that as well!

Sad to hear that the banana plant did not make it. The other plant that you are planting looks a lot like Taro root , but not sure if it is.

Why not just grow them in the greenhouse? Sharing to show others!

We tried to do something similar with different types of apple trees but between the dogs, the goats (that we no longer have), the chickens, and the cows we lost all the apple trees we planted. We've tried several times, and spent a small fortune on apple trees, before we figured out that it was futile to try to grow the trees where we were trying to grow them.
I hope your elephant ears are more successful than your banana plants. :D
God bless you and your wonderful family. :D Have an awesome day my fabulous friend! :D
