The Hidden Elements of Homesteading: Est Apple Orchard!!!

in #homesteading5 years ago (edited)

In today’s vlog, we show you something you usually don’t see.

Everyone loves to see the abundance of fruition- the freshly plucked fruit, the mature and glorious apple tree, yet how often have you seen the beginning stages of such an affair?

Today we give you a glimpse of our vision from the ground up as we prepare Steps 1 & 2, the clearing and initial planting, of our long awaited Orchard.

clearing... largely unnoticed work.

You see, we didn’t take any videos in the early years...

All of the land looked similar to this scrubby and brushy field, replete with buckbrush, brambles and wild persimmons. The clearing happened off camera and now, slowly but surely, you are seeing us reap. It’s an exciting process, but usually only the harvest is highlighted and all that hard work gets hidden!

Not so today, folks! I know there are so many of you doing similar things or aspiring to, and why not disclose this very important aspect of the process?

I truly believe it will also be a cool type of “legacy video” in years to come.

We humans always love “looking back” getting a dose of that perspective. We often hear ourselves say, “Remember what it looked like when we first moved here...”

Now you can see it too and it will be recorded on the blockchain.

It won’t grow leaps and bounds overnight, but these are the important first steps, indeed the foundational steps, to implementing our land based, rooted, perennial permaculture vision!

Today we have prepared the land to plant 7 apples that we bought recently from Ames’ Orchard & Nursery, specializing in disease resistant bioregional fruit varieties.

We are so happy to be getting these in the ground!! Join us for the fun and see what the beginning stages look like in a long term vision. We can “see” it amidst the brush & scrub can you??

disease resistant bioregional fruit varieties.

That sounds like such a dream. I've struggled so much with our fruit trees. I am sure a big part of the problem is that they come from all over Canada rather than from local. How wonderful that you have connected with someone who can supply you with such special trees.

Sometimes it seems like we've toiled all year and made no progress but a glance back sometimes tells another story. I really am excited for you, I know all the work that went into preparing for this moment.

I hear you on bioregional fruit. Out of the 1000s of apple varieties , only 15 make up 90% of production. Apples are tough, no matter where you are though.

I can relate to thinking the toil is all for naught, but it’s all part of the growth process. Have you tried pears? They are said to do much better in most places.

We are honored to have the chance to grow such well adapted varieties. Ames has put soooo much effort into finding what works and we are so stoked to see how they do.

All that said we will put much more of our focus on paw paws, that’s where we see fruit production going!

You are doing an important thing to the world and environment.

Today humans just want to consume but no produce what they consume.

It is my dream too to have a piece of land a plant different variety’s of food.

Thanks for share

Thank you for your kind and so so true of words. There are certainly a lot of treasures and worth to producing what we consume!!!

Very cool place and I see many new things from your video. I waiting for your more videos

so cool to see you guys doing this. unfortunately today in US it is much more common to come across a deserted homestead. with the trees. flowers. maybe a small orchard. all in decay. house gone. maybe a falling down barn left.

It certainly is an exciting time! I know what you mean on abandoned homestead, although it’s usually the pears that far outlive Apples.

Some well built houses still stand, which is inspiring.

When we’re long gone we hope others will enjoy the abundance we’ve set in motion.

Truly yes, the behind the scenes which nobody ever gets to see. Some days we spend so much time in the hard labour stages, that at the end of the day we almost feel unaccomplished when we have nothing to show for it, or so it seems.

Fast forward a few days, months, or years, and it is apparent it was all so worthwhile.

I have tried to have success with apples, losing three within a few years after planting. The determined person I am, I just planted two this summer and will see how they fair. Should these two die I will have to succumb to the realization apples may not be in my future here.

Great video and indeed wonderful to have, to be able to look back on one’s progress!

Ya, the days of hard “invisible” labor can be tough. Looking at work is
So rewarding, but sometime there’s less obvious action needed.

Sorry to hear of your Apple losses, that’s tough. Best of luck with the new ones. One thought is that trees grown in containers often do poorly. It’s said that fall planting bare root stock is best for successful planting. you may have apples on you future, don’t give up;)

Good stuff you're doing there. You're right that we often don't record the earliest stages of our plans. I like to think of them as the private memories we don't share with the world.

I like that, the private memories... I think it makes it more accessible to see projects before they take off.

It keeps it all in perspective. I got so used to how our place has evolved that it was a surprise when we found a USB with pics from before we started

Very nice, 5 years will pass by in no time :) Watch out for any near by cedar trees, apple trees can pick up that dry moss looking bark growth from them :)
