October Blooms | It’s That Time of Year Again! Cleaning, Clearing, Clarifying!

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

Fall in the Midwest is a mercurial thing. Shorts and shirt weather one day, a thick down or rain jacket the next! We went from wearing sandals and sweating a few days ago to needing a cozy fire in the cabin and multiple layers today!

Echinacea, the name coming from sea urchin for its spikey nature, is still blooming and sending up fresh flower heads.

Though we’ve talked about it, beckoning it in a way, it is finally here. Fall, we welcome you!

With the Fall season a clearing energy naturally enters. We start to have fires, eating nourishing foods, cleaning our indoor spaces in preparation for moving inside basically full-time and the land itself is easier to clear as well.

If you look around the homestead, we still see a mix of blooming flowers and retiring seed heads, their bodies in shades of brown sprinkling the landscape. While summer is a time of fervent, even unruly, green growth that can be incredibly difficult to keep up with in order to manage and maintain, Fall offers is a slower pace.

Gazebo looking cleaner than it has for a long while!

We’ve welcomed Fall with this clearing energy. Over the last two days we have walked the landscape, brush scythe in hand, and chopped and mowed hither and yon. Where the jubilee of summer’s growth dominated, sweet and inviting manicured (what we call manicured hehe) pathways.

Cleared space around the cold frame and in front of the solar shed. Paths are so satisfying!

Pathways and boundaries are satisfying to the human eye. After a season of raucous vegetation, it’s satisfying to clear a bit and see the homestead in a new light.

Freshly cut grass and weeds down in the entryway!

In this video I show you a few spaces we’ve cleared, including the gazebo and front entrance.

Ini talks about a few nitrogen fixing plants still in process, even thriving and about a special plant update that you might remember from earlier in the year. I also point out a few flowers that are still kicking it in bright glory.

Ripper Beans going strong

Fall, for many of us, signifies the return of the holiday season, bonfires, community gatherings, the harvest and more. This clearing energy and the time of rest, even slumber, that follows is especially welcome on the homestead.

I feel you so much on that cleaning up time of year...and the sooooo satisfying feeling of clearing energy...and paths. :) new life! I love these garden walks with you two. I'd happily watch these garden walks daily!!! :) clearing and cleaning....around here today too. cheers!

Glad you can relate. I love it and wish the season was even longer cause I donT seem to clean up as much when it's smoking hot. The dieback is nourishing and refreshing for sure. Always great to hear from you.

hey you two... spread this around discord...and to someone who could use the 777sp. https://steemit.com/netcoins/@nathanmars/dm9cma0x :)

Nice little hotbed/greenhouse looking thing withe the bottle-wall.

Thanks, it was a fun project last year that got us started with bottle building.

I like when people build with recycled materials...

Smelling the October air is so refreshing. Feels good to clear the land and put the garden to bed, getting ready for spring.

So true, the rich moisture of cool garden beds for showdowns abundance for next year. Happy to be in touch with the seasons.

@mountainjewel is looking good. One of the things I miss about the change of seasons is the explosion of growth in the spring and green, green summers. People always talk about winters but all seasons are different here. Cold frame? is that like a root cellar? Haven't noticed it before

It's a cold frame that we grow carrots or spinach in over winter. It's got a nice double glazed window covering.

ok. got it. I googled it too. Now I understand.

Yeeeahhh love the clean and tidy up. So satisfying. What did you call your jumper?

Tidying certainly has more closure than starting projects. It's one task that doesn't always come naturally to me.. I think I called it a hoodie.

This was such a change from the earlier season photos that were a riot of growth! A side by side comparison would be cool!

Good point. Things change so much and just so quickly.
