Tour of a Friend’s Farmstead: Tobacco Curing, Solar Setup, Animals & Barn Dreams

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

I have long thought it would be awesome to interview my homesteader and farmer friends. We have some friends who are up to cool stuff!!

We got a chance to go up and visit our good friends and their new baby.

While the country is beautiful, one downside is that we often live quite far from our friends. Everything is spaced out! It makes the time together that much more precious.

We enjoyed a wonderful homegrown dinner and the next day Bre took us on a little video tour. They recently put a new roof and a full solar system that runs their entire farm on their gorgeous old barn that is made entirely from oak!

Bre & Colin have a fantastic vision for the barn including a dance hall, event center and venue space. It’s a really cool spot with a ton of potential and that much cooler that it all runs on solar!

In the meantime, they have a large acreage full of hair sheep, cows, goats and chicken.

Last night Ini and I drove the truck up to the top of their hill and woke up to an incredible view.

It’s always a joy to get together with friends who are doing cool things and enacting their dreams, while also raising a family! Colin also grew tobacco this year and is curing it in the barn.

Another wonderful aspect about having friends with similar interests is that while we overlap, we are focused on different things.

While we mainly work with fruit and nut trees, perennials and edible landscapes, they excel in hardy livestock and they make killer sourdough! We always eat well when we’re with these two (now 4)!

Check out the video for the full tour, but I was also sure to take some photos. Enjoy!

That barn is so cool. Just an old oak barn was enough for me. Solar run event center! over the top :)

Ya, these folks have great things going on!

A cracking barn I love it 💯🐒

So true, this building would be awesome to have on our land.

For sure i'd agree💯🐒

Beautiful homestead... Love to see a lot more of it and with more detail. Very interested in how the solar is set up. For some reason, I am getting an invalid file format error on the video.

It's neat isn't it. They have a 10 kW system that is currently grid tied although they have it set up for future battery bank. Hmm, sorry to hear about the format error, we sometimes have trouble uploading through dtube.

We may do another post at their place soon, so stay tuned.

Looking forward to it... I too have a large grid-tied system that I'd love to convert to battery.

my goodness...you two!!!!! just...WOW!!!!!!!! mmmm...tobacco! resteemed this one...out of total AWE! thanks for all you share with us!!!!!

You're too kind. We love highliting the awesome things that others are doing. Thanks for the constant enthusiasm and resteem! ;)

Love that barn! The siding designs drew my eye for a good while.

I love it too! The 45 is such a more appealing anlgle than 0 or 90... Just a little variation makes a big difference.

Such an amazing barn. Wouldn't it be lovely if farming was as it was in the victorian age in our country and there was more farming community where every sunday people could meet for pot lucks and share in farming work. Of course, maybe that does exist still today , I don't know?

That barn is breathtakingly beautiful. I bet there have been some fun events in there. I love the scents and sounds of a farm in early morning!

The barn cetainly does evoke romantic notions, and I sometimes yearn for more of that 'ol timey scene of a farming community. There are great opportunities for connection, but as we were talking at their house, we are not all on small plots near each other. Instead there is quite some distance between us but we still make the effort to connect.

This barn has great potential for bringing folks together .
