It is a short cycle crop and can produce all year round as there is always a steady market for this crop. The successful cultivation of this crop requires the following procedures;

  • Firstly, good quality seeds should be obtained either from reliable research institution or from previous harvest. This to ensure viability of seed material.

  • A nursery site should be prepared and should be close to a stream or river for purposes of irrigation. It should equally be close to a shed or you ensure a shed is provided, and the best way is that seeds should be seeded in small polythene bags, as they have been filled with good top soil.
  • Also the farm should be close to water source in order to guarantee water supply for irrigation purposes especially during the dry season.

    The farm should be well prepared preferably between December and March so that transplanting will take place at the beginning of the rainy season.
  • Dig holes of 10 to 20 cm one week before transplanting and also fill with organic manure of 1kg/hole same period before transplanting is actually done. Before transplanting is carried out, seedlings should be gradually exposed to sunlight by way of shed removal in order to enable them get acquainted with natural environment.
  • The plant density should be greatly respected as to avoid overcrowding of plants, competition for sunlight and soil nutrients as well create enough space for the spreading of branches.
  • Pests and disease control should be taken seriously as any attack will definitely lead to loss in crop yields.
  • Also, timely weeding is of great essence as it affects yields and should be checked with the use of fungicides and insecticides.
  • Weeding during flowering periods of crop will cause these flowers to fall off, and weeds if not weeded on time will equally compete with the crop for sunlight, water, and soil nutrients.
  • Even manuring calendars should be respected and such activities carried out not during periods of flower but should always be done much earlier.
  • Timely harvesting should be carried so as to avoid situations of crop loss. This because, when they are over-ripe they easily get infested. Fresh peppers are always very attractive in the market and thus fetch farmers much income, thus contribute to their standards of living. Peppers generally are consumed on broad basis and some California wonder are mostly sliced and prepared with other vegetables and is highly consumed in developing countries.
    However, pepper cultivation even for homesteading can be done in containers, waste tires, behind the house for want of space and its cultivation in our homes greatly beautify our environments. So, cultivate your for it is thus self motivating.

I love peppers... and it's a pity they cannot be stored for longer. They do tend to rot very fast.

Thanks for your article, @princelouise!

Thanks very much @trincowski for the support. Really they are perishables and needs to be transformed immediately else it will easily get rotten.

I have no idea how to cultivate a single thing. Great to read your writing. Thanks :)

I just love working with peppers in the kitchen :)

It is quite interesting cultivating this vegetable especially in the kitchen.

Peppers normally spice up our food and make them appetizing , so they are enjoyable when cultivated in home gardens.
