The 21 Day Countdown Begins - Hatching Chicks!
We often buy day old chicks in the spring when they are available at the local farm store. They even run a special where they give away six free chicks if you buy a bag of chick starter food. Picking out the fuzzy little chickens and taking them home is always a highlight of the year.
The problem is the timing. We like to go on vacation in the early part of the summer which happens to be when the young chickens are being introduced to the adult flock and need a lot of attention. It takes a few weeks of coaching before the pullets will reliably go into the chicken house at night. They try to roost in all kinds of places that are not really safe and we worry about them a lot. In the past that has forced us to keep them confined longer than we really wanted to or introduce them to the flock when they are too young to fend for themselves.
This year we are taking a different approach. Hatching eggs ourselves at the end of the summer when we are sure to be home when the chicks need us. This Brinsea Mini incubator holds seven full size chicken eggs and has automatic controls for temperature, humidity, and egg turning.
