Make Windows 10 Home Faster And Safer - Part 5 of 8

in #howto6 years ago (edited)

It is considered 'Best Practices' to use a separate account for admin tasks. This can reduce hacking via the internet by more than 90%. If you already have an admin account that is used only for admin tasks AND none of your user accounts have admin privileges then give yourself a reward and ignore this unit.

Part 5 'Separating Administration Permissions From User Permissions'

  1. In the box on the bottom left of the screen marked 'Type here to search' type in 'family account' and press the Enter key.
  2. Select 'Add someone else to this PC'. Select 'I don't have this persons sign-in information'.
  3. Select 'Add user without a Microsoft account'.
  4. In the username enter either 'ADMIN' or 'Administrator' or a name of your choice.
  5. The password is optional at this stage, but you can enter a password that you can remember.
  6. Select Next then the new admin user then 'Change account type'.
  7. Change the account to to 'Administrator' then select 'OK'
  8. Test the new account by logging on to it.

You now have to wait while Microsoft creates the account and adds in all its advertising.

The first thing to do as soon as you can is to check/change Microsoft Store setting to turn off automatic update (see part 4 ).

A useful admin tool is 'God Mode' you can install this by creating a new folder on your desktop and naming it:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
Thats all there is to it. One of the Win 10 updates hid the folder name (political correctness?) but the icon is still there.

Putting ADMIN user data onto the user data area is suggested but optional.

MAKE SURE THAT ADMIN'S PASSWORD IS RECORDED IN A SAFE PLACE BEFORE YOU PROCEED.

We are now going to remove admin privileges from all other user accounts.

In the box on the bottom left of the screen marked 'Type here to search' type in 'family account' and press the Enter key.

For each account on the page change the account type to 'Standard User'.
Your user accounts now reflect best business practices.

List of parts in this series.

1. Clean up and update your PC.
2. Remove unwanted apps and defrag the hard disk.
3. Creating a User Data volume (optional)
4.  Setting up your User Data volume.
5.  Separating Administration Permissions From User Permissions.
6. Tuning For Performance.
7. Tuning System Settings.
8. Security.
