iWAM Team Competencies Breakdown - Individual vs Group Environment

in #howto6 years ago

Author’s Note: When assessing teams and individual talents, one of the profiling tools we used is The Inventory for Work Attitude & Motivation, or better known as iWAM. With the tool, we can measure your people across 48 competencies, and over this series of articles, we will be exploring deeper into each of the different sets. And because it's easier to reference them against their behavior, we will create fictional characters for each different competency sets. By fictional, do know that they do not reflect anyone in the real world. After all, the focus is their behavior and the psychology behind it, rather than the person themselves. The aim is so you can understand your team members and leaders better, what makes them do the things they do, and from that understanding, develop better work relationships.

COMPETENCY SET: INDIVIDUAL ENVIRONMENT VS GROUP ENVIRONMENT

Here’s a quick snapshot of Sarah, someone who’s motivated by being in Individual Environments

  • Sara is perfectly fine working on her own
  • As a matter of fact, you'd often see her in her cubicle, in a little corner, doing her work. She enjoys having her own office as well.
  • When the office gets to crowded, she will excuse herself and perhaps work from home or the cafe downstairs
  • Even when having her meals, she would put on her headset or flip open a book

When you have someone like Sarah on your team, there's high chance she is being labeled the "anti-social" or "solo-eagle" of the team. It may also occur to you that she is always avoiding get-togethers, and once your team meeting is over, she would be the first to retreat to her desk to continue her work.

Now, because you go on and say that she's a "people hater", do understand that team members like Sarah do their best work when then are alone. They find that they can focus better, are generally more productive. Working in a team may cause their effectiveness to go down, as they struggle to manage the distraction.

If you have a Sarah on your team, be aware that she needs her space to be productive, and ensure that the other team members are on the same page as well. Avoid situations where the rest of the team single him or her out. At the same time, work with the Sarahs on your team to be more outgoing and sociable, by explaining to her why it's crucial to project that for the morale of the team.

Here’s a quick snapshot of Muthu, someone who’s motivated by being in Group Environments

  • Muthu is always around people - work, lunch, projects
  • Whenever he is alone, he will find that his focus is lacking, and is constantly tuned in to see who else are in the office.
  • A naturally friendly person, he is able to talk to anyway easily
  • He is proactive in organising after work meet ups or weekend, and if you look at his Facebook timeline, it will be filled with adventurous and hangouts he has with his friends

An opposite of Sarah, Muthu is outgoing, and thrive when in a crowd. As a matter of fact, whenever he is alone in the office, you will find that his productivity is reduced. He will always be looking out for his colleagues to return, swing by other departments to chat people up, or even start connecting with others over social media.

The Muthus in your group hardly have lunch on this own. They are usually the ones who would go around the office, inviting them to go to lunch together. He would be the one commenting that team mates like Sarah are always the kill-joys and "Individualist". The truth is, they are just motivated by different environment settings.

If you have a Muthu on your team, do be mindful of his productivity. In the process of trying to be in a group environment, he may allow his focus to slip, missing deadlines and targets. Engineer environments where he will be around people at all times, and while he may look to be very proactive in constantly wanting to organise get togethers, appreciate his zeal and energy, and at the same time, stress that KPIs must come first.

If you take a quick look around your office, or maybe those from other departments, can you easily identify which environment setting your staffs prefers to be in? Do know that this is not the case of either or, because there will be team members who can work well in both environments, and do not specifically have any preferences.

Wait, why's Mav posting on Steemit nowadays?

Well, unlike other blogging and social media platform, Steemit is the only platform that allows me to earn cryptocurrency when I engage with it. Yup, one Steem is about USD5, and you, too, can earn Steem Dollars every time you:

  • Create content (articles, blog posts, podcasts, videos, photos)
  • Upvote (like) other people contents
  • Comment on other people's posts
  • Have discussions, share opinions etc!

Yup, basically it's the very same thing you're doing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc all along!

The only difference? For once you can earn a nice income on the side!

Sign up for a free Steemit account, and you can thank me by coming back and upvoting this article. And guess what, you will earn Steem too for doing that! #awesome
