Kirin 980 is expected to debut with the new smartphone in the Mate series
According to DigiTimes, Huawei, through its subsidiary HiSilicon, is preparing to switch to the 7nm processor smartphone chipset. This means that the next-generation Kirin 980 chipset will most likely debut with the next addition to the Mate smartphone series later this year. The Kirin 980 will also feature an improved AI chip from Cambricon.

It is expected that the new production process will lead to 20% higher performance and up to 40% increase in energy efficiency compared to current mobile chipsets.

Along with eight processor cores with a higher clock rate, the Kirin 980 will use a 1M AI chip. It will bring improved performance in visual algorithms to help the triple camera. Improvements are also expected in the graphics processor. All of these improvements will allow Huawei's new chipset to compete with Samsung's (Exynos 9820) and Apple (A12) proposals as well as next-generation Qualcomm offerings.
