Scientists Investigate The Potential of Cyber Agriculture

Hydroponic farms have been popping up everywhere.

It's quickly grown into a multi-billion dollar market, with Africa currently being the fastest hydroponics market, although it isn't the largest. That spot remains with Europe, they currently have the largest hydroponics market, though you can also find a growing number of farming projects in other regions worldwide.

They're growing a variety of leafy greens, some even using the method to grow cannabis, and farmers have been able to produce a significant amount of produce with a smaller amount of space, compared to traditional methods.

Hydroponics is helping to grow produce for communities that allows them to gain access to fresher options that haven't had to travel for days to get to store shelves. While the quality of produce that's being grown with hydroponics is still being debated however, you can find a number of research projects that have been investigating the potential of this farming method.

At MIT, some of those researchers have been sharing their data freely, making it open to the public. They've been investigating the potential of using machine learning technology and hydroponic farming methods to try and grow some basil. They've referred to the approach as cyber agriculture and some think it could eventually become the future of farming.

"Our tools being open-source, hopefully they will get spread faster and create the ability to do networked science together," - researcher C. Harper

Hydroponic farms can be found in the U.S. already, they are able to grow 365 days a year and they use a great deal less water than traditional methods. It enables farmers to grow independent of seasonality and weather,
to be able to grow without the use of pesticides. They've been able to grow more and they're using less while doing it.

Those behind the hydroponics growing systems have insisted that they can grow produce that's just as nutritious as that which has been grown in the ground. This is one market that is expected to continue growing in years to come as it has proven to be a successful, environmentally-friendly, farming alternative. It can help to meet the growing demand for fresh, local foods, and meet the increasing consumption of exotic vegetables, salads, and organic produce demands in the market.

The Hydroponic farming concept can go anywhere in all kinds of terrains and settings. It is certainly farming for the future.

Hydroponics are one leg of the aquaponics duopoly. The other leg is using some animals to generate the nutrition the plants need, such as prawns, crawdads, or tilapia. I have no doubt this is a trend that will continue to grow, particularly as the drawbacks of legacy agriculture continue to conflate the hazards of chemical biocides, habitat loss, and other flaws.

"...some even using the method to grow cannabis..."

Am I the only guy that remembers people growing weed hydroponically back in the '80s?

Thanks!
